I have stumbled apon this Norinco 311-1, and I don't know anything about them. Does this model have a chrome lined barrel ? Are they similar in quality to the new Norinco M4 carbines ? Are the 311-1 any good, or should I stay away from them? Obviously, they look a bit dated, but is it a lot of work to put a scope or red dot on these guns? Is the carrying handle removeable?

Final question......What is this thing worth ? I don't know the round count or anything. It is being sold at a auction, and I don't want to over pay. This is the exact gun that is being sold.

They are copies of early model AR's. A1 models I believe?

I believe carry handle is fixed, so you can't really take it off and throw on a scope.

I hear they shoot well but finish is somewhat light and not very durable.
You will have problems fitting imperial accessories on it, because it is made metric I believe. This one has a changed fore-end however, probably about the only thing you CAN change on it.

Considering the price of the new M4-CQ clones that Norinco is putting out, and the upgraded quality and parts interchangeability you get with those, this 311 is really a dated and obsolete model in comparison.

I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it. Even then, I still think throwing in the extra $200 for a CQ is worth it. If you do get this one, be aware that what you see is pretty much what you get, there will be no super tacticool accessorizing due to the thread difference.

I had one and it shot well. I now have a Norinco M4 and have also owned a Stag.

The finish on the CQ311 is deplorable and you can scratch it with a fingernail.

They are chrome lined and will will not accept a lot of accessories due to the threading (no butt stocks, flash suppressors, etc.)

If that is the actual rifle it looks to have been fitted with a free float tube.

Hey I recognize that pic. Sorry can't help you with the rifle, but I'll be there on the 27th. Not looking for an AR so don't worry, won't be bidding against. Just plan on recording selling prices and make a grab at a deal if the wallet/wife allows.

P.S. They might have that rifle available at the store if you want to get a close look before it makes it to the block.
They just had a S&W M&P 15 available at the store before the last auction. Even used it for a range day.

All of the threads are metric, so if you got a 6 position carbine stock on it, you ain't getting that sucker off....ever! Same with that free float tube, it is not a metric thread and the upper reciever is so I would be somewhat suspect of the assembly. Unless someone re-threaded that handguard, which I doubt, then it is forced on, with considerable force. I wouldn't pay a whole bunch for that partictular rifle but I quite like them. Mine, which I bought for my oldest daughter, shoots very well and after a trigger job I quite like shooting it as well. I changed out the handguard and replaced the handguard retainer, changed the butt stock and the pistol grip. Bear in mind that if you wish to replace the butt stock with a "Modern" one which is slightly longer, you will need to tap the threaded bolt hole in the buffer tube 1/4 28 to accept a longer screw.

These are well made guns and shoot well but as noted above, 1/12 twist so 55 grn bullets!

I had a telestock on mine, now it is back to the original stock. The threads are close to the original on the buffer tube but it takes a lot of screwing, unscrewing to mate a SAE tube on the Norc. Maybe give it a go with the proper tap to make the threads imperial? The finish on the rifle is an ugly gray paint but the rifle itself is made to the old M16A1 specs with pencil barrel. Would look like a later Viet-Nam war M16 with the right furniture, flash hider and a new coat of paint! Never had a malfuction with mine, with all kinds of upper. The only problem with it is that it is made in China...

I've owned a couple of 'em. Good guns, but I wouldn't pay more than $500 for one, considering what else you can get these days. The threading is metric, so you have to be a bit careful getting aftermarket stocks on, but it can be done. As others have said, fixed carry handle and 1:12 barrel.

I just picked one up for less than 500 after HST and shipping from cross country. That's a far better deal than the 699 PLUS tax and shipping for the M4 clones.
Paint can easily be changed, or just properly powder coated or anodized. You can still fit new uppers on there too.
I'm really happy with this price point mainly because I don't really care at all about AR type rifles. I just wanted a platform to try out to see what all the fuss is about, why's every issue of guns and ammo gotta be plastered with them?
Plus i found a great blueprint for a billet lower receiver that i have time to build at work, i just need the rest of the components from a good rifle

Well the auction that I am going to usually has some pretty good deals, and some not so good deals. If I can get this gun for really, really cheap, then I may try to get it, but I won't be paying top $$$ for it, now that I know the pros and cons.

Thanks for the input guys.

It does have a pretty nice handguard on it, way nicer than the stock one. Don't let your bid go much over 500, remember you still gotta pay tax and buyers premium ontop of the winning bid.
If you can't get it for that you might as well save a few more pennies for the M4
