NORINCO 5.56x45 (223 Remington) M193 Ball Cartridges

Seems like the PSI rating between the two rounds doesn't seem to "harm" the .223 chambered firearms. Maybe over the long-term though, maybe someone else can weigh in. If you're thinking AR rifle try and find .223 wylde chamber

no affect "long term". Yes it runs at a nominal higher pressure, but well below the limits of any modern firearm, especially a bolt action.

In Europe, under CIP, they are both the same. It is only in NA that there is a controversy due to misunderstanding of the technical details.

Maybe people assume there's a difference between 5.56 and .223 cartridge thickness and chamber length since some of the surplus 7.62 and .308 Win have a slight difference?

There is very little difference on those either. Mainly the difference in measurement, again.

There's some "sizable," around .004, differences with the Ishapore/Garand/some SA NATO chambers. If you're using the NATO gauges, a commercial .308 win will display a "no go" due to the headspace length.

Not a problem buying 7.62 surplus for a .308 rifle since almost all of the contemporary 7.62 is according to .308 commercial specs simply with a thicker case, but there *might* be a problem if the commercial .308 case wall is thin and you have an older, larger 7.62 chamber.

I've never heard of a problem with 5.56/.223. Everything I've read -skimmed- says anything that isn't handloaded is good to go.

There are differences in the drawings between .223 and 5.56, particularly in the throat area. In theory, it is possible that the 5.56 round might not fit the .223 chamber correctly in that area.
While it is entirely up to the shooter to determine if shooting 5.56 in a .223 rifle is a good idea, has anyone ever observed any problems from doing so? A lot of 5.56 has been fired in .223 rifles. I know I have never observed any indication of overpressure.
