NORINCO 5.56x45 (223 Remington) M193 Ball Cartridges

I purchased ammunition clearly marked .223 on the box, but the head stamp says 5.56 ....mmmmm?

I think they wrote .223 on the box to be more civilian/export friendly. But it is 5,56 as the head stamp say.

Any word on the smell and fireball? lol

In the U.S some people said it smell like cat piss and make fireball...even during day (I doubt the last part).

it is also important to point out that some rifles marked as .223 are built as 5.56 and only stamped as .223 to gain access to markets where 5.56 marked firearms are prohibited, such as here in canada.(am i right on this or was it that the states wont export 5.56?) most ARs are in this catagory i believe, it would not make sense for manufacturers down in the states to build a different chamber for .223 just because our laws are weird. the difference in stamping alone already raises the price of the rifles significantly as it means they need to specifically separate a lot of rifles which will be sent up here to be marked differently.

as for smell i couldnt care less what it smells like, once i start it all smells like burning anyways. Which brings up an interesting memory, a couple packets of my chinese surplus 7.62x39 non corrosive smelled like chocolate.

I'm using Norinco ammo in my Tikka 223. Yep, nice fireball. No, no issues other than it requires a firm hand on the bolt, whereas the Wolf or American Eagle ammo is a bit easier to chamber.

I'm hoping the Wolf comes back on sale. I bought the Norc because it's brass & cheap, but until I get into reloading I'm going back to the Wolf for plinking.

has anyone ever observed any problems from doing so? A lot of 5.56 has been fired in .223 rifles. I know I have never observed any indication of overpressure.

I recall a thread here a while back. The OP specifically wanted to know if anyone had ever blown up their own gun with 5.56 in a .223. NO friend of a friend tales, NO "I read somewhere" stories. Only real verifiable truth, backed up by photos. There were no takers.

Years ago, I had some Norc .223 I was firing out of my Mini 14. At dusk, it looked like a flaming basketball on the muzzle! :)

Friend of mine has a TON of the Norinco 5.56 that he shoots out of his AR. Functions fine, there is a bit of a fireball if the light is right, and it doesn't smell too bad.*

*I shoot nasty corrosive 7.62x39 95% of the time, the wost I've ever fired is Polish surplus from 1987 that literally smelled like you stuck your nose in a firecracker full of rotten eggs with every shot you took, so maybe the Norinco 5.56 will smell a bit worse to someone who doesn't do this to themselves, lol.

I have shot tons of the Norinco 5.56 and have never found the smell to be any worse than any other surplus ammo. The Norinco 5.56 is good stuff and the brass reloads very well.

99.9% of modern 223 firearms, if not 100%, have a chamber able to handle both cartridges

Source ??

Rechambering for 5.56 is relatively simple. 2013 Gun Digest has a good article on why 5.56 should not be fired out of a rifle labelled for 223, unless the chamber gets checked and reamed.

Draw your own conclusions.

lol probably because the mini-14 have no flash hider. It's less when you have one as Anderp said.

The accuracy is good? I won't get 8 inch group, right? But I don't expect match accuracy either

I'm shooting it out of my Tikka (bolt gun). This is average for a 50 yard group for me (first year shooting).
