Saw some white box, labeled Norinco x54r ammo at an LGS, was told it's 150 grain and non-corrosive. It's not the plain white box stuff that was around recently, and was milsurp corrosive.

Anyone have any experience with it? Thought of picking some up because it's the grain I want, but weary of it turning out to be corrosive.

I have only opened the PRC corrosive ammo cans from the crates I have so far. Its very impressive for accuracy out of my PU sniper Mosin and will shoot inside .25cent piece for 4 out of 5 rounds and the 5th being inside a toonie (either its me or the ammo) at 100meters. It does recoil harder than Barnaul as a side by side comparison out of the same rifle and lands about 6 inches higher than the barnaul. I do not like to use it in my SVT40's as i'm afraid the extra recoil will damage the old guns so have mostly just used it in 91/30's and their carbine cousins.

A while ago I heard a local store was selling non corrosive in a white box and it was corrosive re -boxed up in white boxes. if you really want to shoot then buy some and clean your gun very well . or get some dies and reload so you don't have to worry . you can tailor make what you want. I have never had the pleasure or owning a SVT only a Nagant . a buddy who has or had an SVT hated shooting corrosive in it because he said it was a real pain to clean . use boiling water . put some on the bolt face or dissemble the bolt and pour boiling water over it then make sure it's dry then lightly oil . make sure under extractor is dry . I've used a hair dryer.

When it stops being -20 I'll have to test out the old nosin again.... it shocked the heck out of me I expected blasting groups from the PRC ammo. It shoots hot but be very accurate from that one rifle...not sure where the round go out of an M38

I don't get it, what did people do to clean their guns during the war? They barely had water for themselves much less to pour down guns after each use of the gun...

Shooting corrosive is such a chore bleh

I haven’t seen any norc x54r in white boxes so I can’t comment on it but if it’s the same stuff Canam was selling as non corrosive by the crate that has been re boxed it is hit or miss in terms of corrosive and non corrosive, I have done the nail test on the first batch of it I bought a few years back and some of it rusted the nails and some didn’t. Basically it seems that there were corrosive primers in the mix, likely using up old stock. So treat it like corrosive and clean after shooting, I quite like the stuff and bought more. It shoots quite well out of my mosins and svts and it’s cheap or was cheap at the time.

Life expectancy of soviet infantryman was about 2 weeks. I don't think they worried about corrosive ammo much.

my grandpa was conscripted in 1942 at age of 17 and got lucky (wounded) in his first firefight. The only reason he survived the war was that he got into artillery after the hospital. Even there it was no picnic as he got wounded 2 more times, last time for 8 months in recovery.

I'm going to have to do a nail test on the stuff then.
This stuff came (apparently) in cardboard boxes of 1000 rds, it is not Czech repackaged repackaged stuff that came in boxes of 400.

Will post pictures and mail test eventually.

I would treat any "surplus" 7.62x54r as corrosive. On a bolt action, all I use as final swab in the barrel is good old FLUID FILM, available at most automotive places, Co-op farm stores, CT, etc. It contains lanolin, which will stop rust. I shoot all kinds of nasty corrosive in my milsurp rifles, and have used Fluid Film for many years with no rusting. I know the purists will not like to hear that, but it does work. If I do take an old rifle out for a shoot and can't clean it right away, a nice sloppy swab of Fluid Film and a hang tag "Clean before shooting" is all it gets. I gather that a dab on the bolt face would be a good idea as well.
