The UPS guy came over today, and dropped of a nice little present. I figured for $129 from SFRC - what the heck. I opened it up and it appears to be a very nice little gun for the price. Oily as sin, but quite nice. It cycled well - loaded snap caps without flaw. Trigger and action was surprisingly nice (probably all the oil). Our dance card is quite full for the next few days, so the degreasing and closer inspection will follow in a little bit.

I had one from a different dealer and returned it. Fired high brass shells would stick in the chamber. Many internal parts (like the extractor) looked handmade, not in a good way.

I actually love mine. I got to use it at 1230 last night. I was out walking the dog on a lake about 6 km from home, left the jeep running and pointed out on the lake with the hi-beams on and as I was about 3/4 of the way across the lake, I saw a set of eyes reflecting on the shoreline among a couple of trees. I told the dog to "go get him" and he took off lookin for war. I realized the eyes belonged to a wolf after he came out on the ice. My dog had stopped and just started staring (only 11 month old yellow lab). I called him back, and just watched the wolf slowly walk our direction. (he was still about 250 yards away. when he got about 175 or so, I had my 780 over my shoulder and let off 4 rounds of buckshot towards him. What a friggin flamethrower!!!!!!!!!!! Wolfie wasn't long hightailing it out of dodge. (and yes, I have wolf tags)
It cycles like it has sand in it, BUT, its very heavy and durable. I wouldn't think twice about using it as a baseball bat if it FTF. Its about 8 pounds. Solid gun if you ask me.

Notice the copious amount of greasy oily sludge in the box... ewwww...

After a little wipe down to get the sludge out....

And after being ripped into a bunch of little pieces... Some of the edges are a little crude, but overall it's a decent gun. It didn't want to stay in full lock up - the pump would move backwards out of battery about 1/4". Simple adjustment to the stop inside and it was nice and tight. I think with a couple beer and a dremel it could be smoothed out nicely. The follower is a piece of poop...I'll make a casting of it and pour up a more robust "hi-vis" follower sometime next week...

apparently this 780 has no interchangable parts to the 870 remmy's/ or the Norinco hp9 shotguns. This apparently means it cannot stand on its own as a cheap, short shotgun that has already been used by me as a defensive shotgun. I was outside for over an hour in -34 degrees, then it racked and shot 4 rounds no problem, so I give it a personal "Pass". It doesn't cycle all that smoothly (at least mine doesn't), but I expect that it will with many cycles of ammo. It went BOOM when I asked it to, so I am happy.

I'm definitely happy to hear that man. That's good that you had a piece during that wolf encounter. Could have gone south in a bad way real fast for sure.

I was just askin out of personal curiosity because I have an HP9 I just got. I didn't mean to sound like I was askin cause I thought you gun wasn't worthy for defense against critters or nothin. Sorry if it sounded like that. Just curious.

For $140.00 more you can have a shotgun with a five year warranty and the ability to interchange with 870 parts, including a pistol grip that will still make is non-restricted.

Never even thought you were dissin me.(fellow Newfie here) I was just speakin to all the naysayers that will inevitably chime in here to speak of all the evils that can be bought for 129.95
I like mine for what it is, a cheap shotgun that I think is worth at least the price, and I sure don't care if I get a scratch on it. It was only bought with self defense in mind anyhow, and at the time I didn't have the extra 140 bucks for the HP9. I have 5 other shotguns (including a remington, and 2 winchester pumps, plus a baikal SxS, so this was just a very purpose-specific buy. No skeet shooting, no bird hunting,.......Just a short shottie to throw on my back for walking the dog in the wilderness (lots of that up here in Yellowknife) and for my deep woods fishing trips that includes at least 2.5 hours of walking in Bear country each way.

I had withdrawn myself from "black" shotguns some time ago and moved more towards the carbine collection. But for 129 bucks, doesn't hurt to have one of these kicking around. I believe with a little massaging, it will suit my needs just fine... and like Sgt Rock has already said, I will not care if it gets scratched or dinged. And in terms of spending another 140 for an HP9 with a warranty - I can get a whole other 780 for less than that price and have a spare gun ;-)

Its funny because HP9 guys bash the 780 guys while (real)870 guys bash the hp9 guys. Its like a pecking order or a food chain or something.

No pecking on my end... I would have preferred something a little more refined, but for just over a hundred bucks, it is what it is. I had read reviews an comments that the 780 is a POS, however for the price, I thought I'd try it - Heck I've spent that much money on a sub-standard steak dinner, and I turned that into poop ;).

In reality, there are some mangy parts on the gun. The follower is much like the cap off a small spray bottle. The end cap retention system is plastic, crowned to lock into the metal end cap. And some of the internals are a little rough around the edges. Again, a beer or two, plus dremel and a bit of cold blue and it'll be more than fine... especially for the price.

From what I was told it's the bars on the forend that can get bent or are already bent. Check that out if you have any issues.

So no interchangability at all? not even the barrels? Im considering getting one for much the same reason - and it'd be a nice bonus if I could slap that short barrel on my 870 on occasion (hell, it'd be the same price for just the barrel).

The action bars were ok - just not as smoothly finished as the Remington 870's I've had. I'm heading to a friends for New Years Eve, and I'll bring the 780 with me - he still has several 870's and a number of different stocks, so I'll play with a few pieces and see what interchanges...

Well we just got finished messing around with some part swapping on the 870 and the 780. Side saddle lined up perfecty but it was a bit long (6 round) so the forearm was blocked from fully cycling the action. Speed feed forarm worked, as did the pistol grip stock, however the mounting bolt is of a different thread pattern. Extended safety will work but a bit of the trigger housing will need to be milled out to allow the oversize end to fit properly.
The barrel fit the 870 but the mounting lug I was too far forward to secure it to the gun.

I'm quite happy about the parts being so close and should have this little fella together in no time.

Pics to follow when I get home to a camera and a computer.
