I have seen a few threads on this now and figured I would chime in. When I first got my M4 i got the .22 kit for it so I could get cheap trigger time until I could get components for .223. After shooting the .22 I would put my .223 bolt carrier back in and shoot a couple .223 rounds to blow out the gas system...very important. But I noticed the gun wouldnt lock open when empty. It would cycle fine and zero jams but wouldnt lock open. Luckily Naoh knows a ton about ARs and helped me out. First he thought it might be the buffer spring so he lent me his DPMS buffer and spring but it still wouldnt lock open. Next we swapped bolt carriers and bolts... still worked fine but would not lock open. Then he noticed when you pull the charging handle to the rear there was bearly any clearance between the bolt catch and the bolt. So he unscrewed my buffer tube one turn and bingo, problem solved. I went to the range and loaded one round into my mag shot it it locked open. Did this a couple dozen times worked every time. It needed no parts just some expertise. If your M4 wont lock open try unscrewing your buffer one turn if that doesnt give you enough clearance shave a mil or two off the buffer. Mine has worked flawlessly ever since that simple fix. Hope anyone else having this problem reads this...its an easy fix.
