hey guys

i just got my norinco cqa yesterday and i love it!

i took the gun apart and notice the bcg was a grey colour, my guess some type of coating. if i wanted it silver and shinny only for cosmetic reasons could i sand it down just a bit for that look?

I'm not an expert (they will be along shortly) but many gun parts are machined to size, then heat treated to harden the surface for durability.

This heat treatment extends only a few thousands of an inch below the surface and will be destroyed by sanding and the part will wear out quickly.

So, if the bolt is heat treated, leave it alone!

You won't wreck the surface hardness by sand blasting.....unless maybe if you sandblast it for several days ;)

The 'coating' is called 'phosphating' and in the case of the Norincos is most likely zinc phosphate (zinc tends to be more grey while manganese tends to be more black). It's an etched surface and it helps hold oil and prevent rust.
If you polish the bolt carrier and remove the phosphating, it's going to be more susceptible to rusting.
 
If you are dead set on a BCG that is shiny, you can buy them that are hard chromed but they tend to be a little spendy
