I have a line on one of these and wanted to know what I'm looking at. I read a few whisps of information on a New Zealand rimfire board that this is a consumer version of a Chinese competition rifle, dunno if there's any truth to that.

This rifle is a training rifle for the chinese army and is fitted with Olympic target rifle action and chamber and excellent barrel. Used for part of sniper training.

It is capable of extreme accuracy with experienced club shooters and top match grade ammos. Last Thursday on the range I managed with Eley ammo a five shot group at 50 meters of 0.13" CTC. That's 1/8th inch. Has a best for me with plain hunting ammo of 0.31" Also shoots sub MOA at 100m (109 yards) frequently, and for me has a best group of 0.43".

Reply #20 - Jun 5th, 2010 at 3:05pm 6possums - regarding the Brno and the Em332, they are actually quite comparable rifles.

Like the Em, the Brnos were never manufactured to be market-leading expensive arms, but even though comparatively inexpensive, were made to a high technical spec and produced excellent performance - commonly out-performing top name firearms.

The Em332 is certainly not normal norinco fare, and as my gunsmith noted, may not be a norinco at all in original design. It is a high spec little military rifle with an extremely good match grade action and bolt system, excellent barrel and much higher level of technical finish. The Em is very similar to current cz/brnos in terms of quality.

Recently a cobber bought a new cz452 american and after range testing bought it round. We did a side-by-side comparison with my 2007 Em332. The Cz had a slightly better varnish finish and a more ergonomic sporting design. Inletting in the woodwork could have been tidier on both - but not an issue. The Em had a better made trigger guard area, better metal magazine construction than the plastic cz mags, and a better more usable safety catch setup. The bolt actions were both very good, with the Em having a tighter more precise feel. Barrel and receiver area of high standard on both.

When then compared on the range the Em with its match chamber/action comfortably outshot the CZ.

Overall, there is not a great deal of difference between two very good 22s. There is little doubt with import/export costs the CZ is grossly over-priced at $800-1000, whereas the Em is also seriously underpriced at $300-350. At current prices the Em is hands-down winner, and by far the best value/performance bolt action available in NZ.

However, if the CZ452 and Em were the same price - and they should be - it would be very even. The CZ has slightly more sporting feel, with fine action and performance. The Em has the match action, slightly heavier target style feel, and offers more precise shooting esp out at 100 meters - ideal for the hunter who wants long distance accuracy and likes shooting groups.

Comparable, and both excellent options. High class 22s.
