Norinco HP9 Feed Issues

Hey CGN,

I just got back from the range, and was experiencing a few issues with my HP9. The internals are all stock, a few modifications to the cosmetics but stock barrel, trigger group and receiver. Anyway I was having an issue (and this wasn't the first time that this has happened) where the action fails to feed the shell out of the tube and into the receiver, to then be loaded into the chamber.

I had this issue at first with dummie rounds, and first chalked it up to the rims of the dummies being worn down too much. Then I had the same issue with bird shot, gave it a good cleaning and it seemed to function ok but not as well as I would like, with the occasional FTF. Today I was shooting fiocchi buckshot with high brass and again I had the same issue (gun was clean and lightly oiled). Maybe every 3rd or 4th round failed to come out of the tube.

Anyway I think that the problem might be the follower. I was looking at ordering the one from SJ hardware (the type 3, as it's designed for 4 rd tubes), but before I order I just wanna run it past you guys so you can point me down the right path.
Thanks a lot!
Fred

I would say follower too. Have you examined it for any burs or scarring on the follower to see if it's getting stuck somewhere. Have you tried pushing it up and down with your finger to try and get it to stick. Also is it a certain shell number that gets stuck. Last shell second last shell?

I also have an HP9 but I have not experienced this issue.

I actually think the follower seems to be working ok. It doesn't seem to be getting stuck anywhere. I've been really taking a close look at it and I think that the problem is most likely the right hand latch (when looking at the receiver flipped upside down). It doesn't seem to be letting the shell leave the tube the way that I think it should be. I've read a bit about the proper function of the latches and only the left hand one is supposed to move on the pull stroke, and the right hand one should move on the push stroke, but I don't see it moving at all. The trigger group is installed (so the shell latches are lined up correctly I guess). Have you ever had any issues like this?

When I give it a good jam back it usually goes but it's only a problem that's recently developed and that's not the way it's always been. I tried spraying some duster behind the shell latch because I have no other way of cleaning it. I've read that you can't take the shell latch off without a latching tool otherwise you'll have no way of getting them back in. Is this right?

I went with the type 2 and HD spring combo. Type 3 was not available back then.
Its your best deal and makes a huge difference. You wont be disappointed in your purchase. Imo

I have a Grizzly. Basically the same. I also had to trim the lift plate as it would catch on the primer of the shell ready to be cycled.
After the trim it ran 100% except for feeding the last round. After the S&J follower and spring its been 100% for the last 80 rounds.
I did polish the inside of the feed tube with steel wool first but it did not help.

I'm considering trimming down the left shell latch to let the shell better slide over and past it. I think it might be mildly stupid so before I do anything I'll await some feedback. What do you guys think?

I'd put money on timing of the shell latches being the issue. If you're mechanically inclined, you can probably work out how to make the adjustments correctly. It's not rocket surgery, but it does need to be done "just so". I'd say you should try to track down the AGI video on the 870 (American Gunsmithing Institute), I think they talk about timing to some degree.

As a few people have said already the shell latch needs to be looked at. It is becoming more common with remington express now the QC seems to be much lowere.
If you have an 870 style gun long enought this will. Become and issue.
That said it is common for HP9 to have this issue right out of the box.
A little trimming/adjusting may be needed.
The follower is a known issue, the remington factory is bad the HP-9 needs to go the moment you get the gun.
As much as we feel we make the best follower on the market, you need to swap out that follower right away.
Do check the start of the mag tube for burrs

Hey,

What I ended up doing was taking off a very small amount of material just on the corner of the left shell latch (when looking at the receiver through the bottom feed port) with a dremel. I think that the problem was that as I broke the action in (after >500 rounds) the material on the portion of the same left shell latch that contacts the pump arm was slowly being removed after each time that I cycled the action. Effectively once enough material was removed, the shell latch wasn't being pushed outwards far enough to fully allow the next round out of the tube and into the receiver. With a small circular metal bit on a dremel I removed a very small amount of material, just enough to let the shell pass, and now there seems to be no issues with feeding. I think this should pretty much solve it because I think that now that the action is broken in, it won't be removing much more material from the shell latch.

I'd also like to point out that I was contacted by the company who imports norcs into Canada, and he let me know that they all have a 5 year warranty which I was pretty impressed by, because I was definitely under the impression that there would be no warranty with norc products what so ever! It's great to learn that I was wrong. I don't think however that I'll need to use the warranty because the issue seems to be resolved.

Hey badboybeeson, I don't seem to have any issues with the follower right now. What sort of difference will I notice if I try one of yours?

that's great to here that you got it working.
fyi only marstar offer 5yr on norks, they import, the reast rang from 0- 1year.
First off ours will not melt when you use bore cleaner, ill dig up the photo of the test I did in 2006 .
put a rem factory ,S&J and nork follwer is a container and sprayed then down with brake cleaner.
NOT GOOD!!!
Nork melted ito a pile of goop the Remington one split and cracked ours was un touched.
ours are CNC milled from solid derlin not plastic, they will not crack do not need to be lubed and will not melt if you use cleaner.
They are also very well made and a bright green
At some point this year we will hit 50,000 sold.
