As the title states. Can anyone enlighten me as to why these things have so much popularity in the Canadian gun community. The reason why I'm asking is because I was talking "shop" so to speak with my cousin in Las Vegas and he has never heard of the brand. So he goes to his gun shop as well as Bass Pro and most of the responses pretty much were, they have never heard of the brand or stay away from it.

So..

Thanks for any enlightening responses....

Chinese firearms imports were banned by the Clinton Administration in the mid-90s IIRC to punish the Chinese for human rights violations...

So it has been 18 years since stores have seen the Norinco brand. Unless you were talking to a longtime store employee, they would not have heard of the brand.

If the U.S. market were to be opened up to allow Norinco's in,

very few of their products would make it in to Canada, at least for awhile.

If we think it took a long time to get the Norinco 1911 in 9mm,

think how long it would take if they had 10 times the amount of people, after them.

They're cheap, that's the main reason for the popularity.

Some Norinco stuff can be imported by the states but not much...shotguns in some configurations were allowed pretty recently.

They have generally got good frame and slide composition but machining can be questionable. Their small parts are mediocre and their springs can be counted on to the degree that a Liberal senator can be counted on to show up for every sitting of senate.

The 1911 frames make great base pistols for custom builds on account of the steel.

Consider however that when Bill Wilson talked about using Norinco frames, he didn't just pull frames off the shelf and stick parts in. A custom Wilson on a Norinco frame involved extensive work ON THE FRAME as well.

So they can be good guns but you need to know what you are looking at.

Since 99% of people have no idea what they are looking at, the popularity of Norinco guns in Canada is based mainly on the price.

Trust me, most Americans I know would love to get their hands on a $350 1911A1 pistol if they could.

Gosh, if a firearms expert like the clerk at Bass Pro tells you to avoid something you should listen carefully...... not.

I work for a shop that rcieves 10+ phone calls a day from americans asking if they can be imported. Apperantly they where banned in the mid 90s because the importer was caught doing something illegal and being made in China it was a perfect excuse.

Not to mention the American 1911 manufacturers wouldn't like that there was an essestially good 1911 in competition with theirs that was only $350'ish base price.

Yes, they are lower cost than any other 1911. But, if the quality was commensurate with the cost they wouldn't have the following they do. What they really offer is value far beyond their price. Pick up an Armco tuned Norc for $479 and you have a gun that is not equalled for less than $1000.

Now consider what type of shooting the vast majority of gun owners do in Canada. No CCW, no wilderness carry, range only plinking and some possible competition shooting (usually at a very non-serious, hobby level). For 95+% of the shooters, a Norc is more capable than they are and offers 99% of the performance of much more expensive guns. The serious shooters buy what they want/need for a lot more money while the duffers (myself included) are very well served by a Norc for far less money.

Great value, solid performance and low cost. THAT is why they are so popular.

Why are savage rimfires more popular than anschutz here?

Value priced and by most accounts, solid performance.

Slag norinco's all you like, I've bought two second-hand and and they work flawlessly. Not the prettiest, but that's why the original owners sold them.

Lots of folks here are of the opinion that shooting is expensive therefore you shouldnt mind spending over a thousand dollars on a gun marginally different operationally than a $350 gun. They are entitled to their opinions. I'd rather pay $350 for a norinco 1911 than have no 1911 at all.

My Norc SKS blew hot powder back in my face. It was sold after the first trip to the range, so maybe I am still a little jaded. I also do not "try" and buy things from China, but that is my issue .:D

Ive handle quite a few now and I would never buy one.... Havent tried one yet that I would want to own. same goes for that PARA US made crap....

I rather shoot a real sig or 1911
