Okay, I capitulated and finally got myself a Norinco M-14, new unfired and in the box. :D In taking the rifle apart for a thorough degreasing and cleaning, I noticed that there is no metal barrel liner in the stock channel. Is this normal? My Mini-14 had one, does the Norinco have one too or is it not necessary on this rifle?

Also, the rear aperature sight is PATHETICALLY small. Unless you are firing into direct sunlight, you can barely make anything out.:( Any way to fix this without resorting to replacing the whole thing?

I want to bring this out to the range this weekend, but don't want to fire it if anything is missing!:runaway:

Hey Scout3006...
(1) The M14 doesn't have a liner in the stock for the barrel...

(2) Did you try taking some de-greaser to the peep sight? If it's still a problem, you can drill it out to the proper size. Alot of guys drill them out to the size they want...

Cheers

Ah, that's a relief! :D

I drilled out the hole a tiny bit, it looks much better now. (I wouldn't mind getting it a little bigger, though.)

Another thing I forgot to mention; does the rear sight move via just turning the drums on the receiver? Elevation adjustments seem fine, and I can turn the windage dials one way but not the other. Is there a special tool that you need, or is it just being overly sticky because it's new?

Do yourself a favour and get a USGI M14 or M1 rear sight, the Norinco ones aren't that great. While you're at it a GI fiberglass stock and you're set.

Hey Scout3006:

Glad to see that you have joined in the addiction. Right after the 1911 addiction. ha ha ha

Yes feel free to drill out that aperture to the size YOU want. Many shooters I know have made that aperture a ghost ring for their 3 gun matches, you know: runnin' and gunnin'.

Better yet, find some M1 Garand sights and replace the chinese ones, that's if you insist on using iron sights. Many CGNutters prefer to park the iron sights and ONLY use the optics. Gets around the problem with having to replace the soft as dog shzt chinese iron sights.

Remember, if you need to learn more, just ask us; or anyone here on this forum. If you have lots of time (like 6 or 8 hours) you can order the 2004 Abbotsford M14 clinic on a 2 disc CD set.

Cheers,
Barney
