Hi,

Are the Norinco M14S rifles chambered for .308 winchester or 7.62 NATO? Cause if they're chambered for .308 winchester, then we can use 7.62 milsurp in them right? But if they're just 7.62 Nato, then the pressure of commercial .308 will damage the rifle. Anybody got the answer? And where does one get 7.62 milsurp these days?

They are chambered for 7.62. Headspace is usually a little over .308 but to date no one has come forward with a report of a blown up gun. The conclusion seems to be grab some .308/7.62 and blast away.

They are good guns, but I think you are giving them a little more credit than due when you ask whether they are chambered for 308 or 7.62. I don't think they follow too tight of tolerances nor can you expect two guns to be alike in that regard. I shoot both out of my guns and so far no problems. About the only limitation people speak of is not using too heavy of factory 308. Don't shoot (a lot of) 180's is common advice.

7.62mm NATO vs. .308 Win.

SAAMI maximum pressure rating for both 7.62 and .308 should be the same.
A NATO spec. chamber is a couple of thou. larger in the neck area compared to a SAAMI spec. chamber; this is to ensure an extra margin of chambering reliability during full auto battle conditions.

Don't anybody worry, lots and lots of us M14 Norc owners have been firing the commercial .308 (many people can afford expensive factory ammo) without any troubles. Now for the reloaders: JUST NECKSIZE, and you will be good to go. When you get to my clinic, I'll be explaining it all. "Do you want the long answer or the short answer?"

Webman1 just gave you the long answer.

The short answer? Just neck size! That's if you are using the Norinco M14 bolt, some of us are using USGI bolts, and we end up with tighter chambers, maybe because we reload or maybe we like things nice and tight.

Peace be to journey,
Barney
