Looking at buying a M14 can anyone give a comparison of the quality of the Norinco to US made? Are they just as durable, do they require gunsmithing? thanks

the gunsmithing issues relate to the OLD norcs, not the new ones- the chinese have learned and upgraded- your information is coming from the states and is biased, to say the least-

9.3x62:

Don't buy ONE ! BUY TWO of them !! There are hundreds of threads about their quality. These threads go back about 2 years on this forum. Dig back and get lots of reading in.

You will never get any value out of the M1A's for the couple of thousand you are gonna drop compared to the $ 450 you are gonna spend at Marstar. I've bought 2 of them.

the quality is very good i'd say.you'll find most people want to replace the chu wood stock for something else.one possible iwill say is that i re-indexed my barrel,i didn't have to,but i didn't like the front sight canted to one side.that was my m305 ,i don't know about others.the rear sight on mine wasn't holding elevation as well,i needed to snug it up a few times to find out how much torgue the screw needed to hold.it is fine now but my garand never had this issue.don't take my post as a negative,i love mine[hell, i'd sleep with it but my wife won't let me]

How does one distinguish the old from the new, and when approximately did Norinco start improving the product?

+1
Just how do we know?
Oh, and I got 2 as well.

uninformed guess here. But I believe the ones that are so-so that some US companies like to diss are from about 15 yrs ago or so. This would have been before Clintons Chinese arms ban. So, if you're M14 was imported way back then you MIGHT have some problems or (like most guys) you'll never have any serious problems.

Anyone know for sure on this??

I think the old ones are blued rather than parkerized. BUT.. there are many people here who have the old ones and have no negative issues with them at all. Phone up Marstar and buy a couple of new ones! :D

some of the old ones are parked too- i'm not sure , but you can always check for the angle grind on the left side of the receiver- just above where the scope mounts- if it's there , it's an old one for sure- however, i've got one of the very first ones imported by lever and there's no problems with it other than the chu wood and no bayonet lug- and all the fun stuff is still there too except for the full auto lug and it's related parts-

I've owned mine for 3 years and have put well over 1,500 rounds through it with ZERO problems/malfunctions.

Proper maintenance/cleaning/greasing will ensure the flawless operation of your Norinco M-14S

Buy one...and love it!!!

like most here, I have more money tied up in custom guns than I care to admit or think about. The cheapest gun I own is by far the most fun... my M305.

I am at over 6000 rounds through mine (all Portugese 7.62) and except for one 20 round... I mean FIVE round mag that gets too snug when it's full, It has NEVER jammed, misfed, or needed any IA whatsoever.

I may get around to doing some of Guru Skullboy's tweaking (the uncontested god of the 305), but other than spending some time on the stock (which was really crude out of the box) it has had nothing done to it. That is part of its charm i think.

Why this is no longer in widespread use as an infantry weapon is beyond me. They're incredible.

because some wisearce figgered out you only need a 22 for battle, not a 30 cal- never mind you need 2 shots to accomplish what 1 used to- grainular speaking-more ammo is supposed to figure out to more hits downrange, but it doesn't work out that way in real life

Not sure where you are basing your facts on this...having participated in real life issues my self. I am just curious what you are basing this on, your experience or what you have read? Feel free to PM me on this rather than hijacking the post...

On an M305. I have a number of them and they are good value. Fun to shoot and play with. I have had a couple that needed some work to make 100% but most are great out of the box. I would say, as noted above, there is no need to replace stuff on the rifle as a matter of course. Shoot it and spend the money on ammo. This "I must" replace concept is flawed. It it works, use it. If you upgrade the rifle with alot of expensive parts and bits, you rapidly approach the cost of a new M1A from Springfield which comes with a warranty....which in this day and age is worth something. So in short, just shoot the thing...spend your money on ammo rather than cosmetics...

Is there a norinco carbine like the socom 16?

:) I like the way you think!

The M305 is a gem. You can keep it stock or blow your bank account with mods. Either way you have a good gun. Where else can you buy a non-restricted, reliable, semi-auto in the manly .308 for $400. Buy one and have fun shooting it or have fun tweaking it, either way you'll be a happy camper.
