I just purchased and M14s or M305.. i bought it online and it was listed as 308 Winchester, when the rifle arrived i noticed on the barrel it is listed 7.62x51.. i have read some places it is the same round and i have read also that there is an issue with head spacing .. My question is will i be able to fire 308 win ammo in this M-14 or do i need to source out some 7.62x51 Nato rounds for it to be safe ??? Due to availibility of ammo here on the island i was only able to find 308 win in 145 grain FMJ American eagle .. hoping this is safe to fire and someone can clear up my confusion as i have always used only ammo that was stamped on the barrel for any firearm... , i have done an initial tear down and cleaning on rifle and everything seems in working order.. am i safe to take this beast up the hill to blast some tannerite or do i need a gunsmith first???

Shoot it. 7.62 NATO chambers are spec'd for higher pressure - can't recall exactly what off the top of my head, but they are generally a sloppier chamber, coupled with longer throat to handle higher pressure loads. Someone else may be able to go to detail on specific NATO ammo this applies to, as I'm not sure that ALL ammo marked 7.62x51 NATO is loaded hot. It may be - I just don't know.

The ammo you bought will give you no grief at all.

Yes it will be fine with that ammo ..they don't like much heavier grain of bullet though. Federal Powershock 150gn come in a blue box at Crappytire work really well.
Try and find some of the Surplus Norinco copper washed ammo as it shoots well too .

actually , I've found if you roll your own, it shoots best with 165-168 MATCH bullets- IT'S A very GOOD PLATFORM TO LEARN ON- I have 7 of them on hand right now, 4 of which wear 4-12x40 scopes

Thanks man.. was thinking that would be the answer, going to go to the mainlaind next week to see if i can find the bulk stuff for a decent price .. lots of aftermarket goodies for these M305's and i just wanted to make sure i am okay with the 308 win rounds as that is what it was listed as when i purchased it from Ellwood Epps .. thanks again..

Thanks i have always wanted one and with the impending UN #'s the libs are trying to impose the price of imported firearms i am told may go up as much as 200$ per firearm.. time to fill a few slots in the safe before that goes thru..

Nope, it's the other way around. You might be thinking of 223 vs 556

308 is spec'd to higher pressure than 762x51

556x45 is spec's to higher pressure than 223

Either way, as far as the op is concerned, have at'r. The differences will mean absolutely nothing for firing factory ammo.

Have fun. And don't shoot your eye out with that tannerite :p

Regarding ammo, the chinese copperwash 7.62 is great bang for the buck. Dont know where on the island you are but crappy tire in nanaimo sells 125 round packs for $70. Once in a blue moon one od the sponsors will put cases on sale

Well, shyte! You are very right. Thank you for the correction. I was so #### sure... Gotta remember, engage brain, THEN mouth!

Sorry OP - hope I didn't add confusion:slap:

Hmmmm.....

It's Good Friday, and I'm cruising CGN and stumble upon this little nugget of a thread....

Here's a little bit of info for y'all....

308 Winchester is a SAMMI spec cartridge that is limited to a "maximum" pressure by SAMMI spec.

7.62 NATO is a military spec cartridge that is spec'd to have a certain velocity. NATO makes no reference to pressure measurements what-so-ever.

Velocity and pressure are linked, as in you can't get one with-out the other. With-out pressure from burning propellant pushing the bullet down the bore, you don't get velocity.

SAMMI publishes its data, powder conmpanies and bullet manufactures produce manuals to correlate to SAMMI's guidelines. Ammunition manufacturers produce ammo based on pressure guidelines from SAMMI.

Ammunition manufactures producing ammunition to meet NATO spec do not. They aim for certain powders that their client has asked for to be used in a cartridge spitting out a spec'd projectile at the desired velocity.

So unless you have pressure testing equipment, you cannot with any degree of accuracy tell anyone if 7.62 NATO is higher pressure, or if 308 Winchester is higher pressure. And even if you did have access to the testing equipment, you would only able to say definitively for the batch of ammo tested. The powder and projectiles change from lot to lot and manufacturer to manufacturer....

All that said, OP; you will seldom have a problem shooting NATO ammo out of your M14s. You will find that 80% of the commercial 308 win ammo off the shelf will do some serious harm to your rifles operating system.
