:pOrdered one from Marstar today. So what should I do before I take it to the range? Should I dissamble it into bits and clean it before shooting? Is there any special tools required to do so? Is is safe to shoot 180gr handload in it?

:DThank you all.

You need to remove the cosmoline and you also need to learn how to field strip and assemble it so start there. Then grease it up and reassemble, I believe one of the stickys shows where to grease. (Locking lugs and recesses, operating rod track, bottom surface of rear receiver bridge, bottom of bolt and top surface of hammer.) Don't forget to clean the cosmoline out of the barrel and chamber.

Enjoy!

I am currently writing an FAQ about what to look for when you get your brand new Chinese M-14.

The inspection report you will get with you brand new rifle will show that all the inspection boxes are checked off as "GOOD" ...
BUT???

I believe 180 grain is a bit too heavy. There should be a thread about it.

you believe correctly: this thread has been discussed ad inifintum( that means plenty for those who don't know latin) -165-168 grain max unless you want to hammer the s*it out of the action and buy another-even the top end is only 175, not 180

I'm off to the range with my new puppy too. It's marked ..M14 .308 CJA SFLD. MICH. which I thought was kind of weird. I've stripped er down and cleaned and lubed everything mentioned in previous posts. I had to gauge out a bit off wood behind the trigger guard to release it. I fiddled with the rear sights and they're stiff as hell! So I have 2 questions before heading out. At what range is a good zero. With my SKS I do a 25yrd zero that puts it on at 200. With the AR I do a 50 yrd that gets me close at 200. So what's the magic number for 308? Second, with all the lube grease used to keep er functioning, what is a good readily available(canadian tire) type of grease to use. Thanks

standard old lithium- that's what i use- what you need to do is look up a set of ballistics tables for the 308 as it varies with bullet weight- i think it's about 27/200/150, but it's been so long i don't remember- and your mbr is about 267 anyway

due to the effective semi long range ability of the .308...... i zero my scope at 200 yards... for hunting purposes anyways. With my current load choice for hunting , federal power shock SP 150gr, and a 200 yard zero, I'm hitting around the 3" high mark at 100 yards and 9 inches low at 300.

Thanks. I did a search as suggested and found some great ideas in regards to iron sights and zero. One forum was about individual owners and the amount of clicks from the bottom up on the rear sight to obtain certain distances ie 8up = 100yds,10 for 200 and 27up from btm. for 600 yrds. I'l be writing those down when I get to the range. Also the idea of adding extra clicks for a 6oclock hold ie +3more at 200yrds,+2more for 300yds. Anybody know their clicks? Then the idea of zeroing POA and POI at 25 will get you on paper at 200yds. Any of this sound right? Or should I try again? Thanks

It will vary from rifle to rifle. For 100m, rather than 8, think 8-12. (Count them, and that is correct for your rifle.) For 200m, think about -1.

I zero at 100 because that is the distance I usually shoot at and because it just takes a simple twist of the left knob to shift to 200, that is what the elevation adjustment is for! I just use Can Tire white lithium grease. It really doesn't take much, you're not gobbing it on, just coating the surfaces.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. Great info which I put to the test. Factory 200 setting is actually pretty close to the real distance on my rifle. As best as I can shot right now anyway which is about 12"X18" gong at 200m. I never did back the dial down to shoot at the 100m distance by just wheeling it in on the rear. I wonder if this will coincide distance to dial markings in actuallity. Thanks

If you read the manual, you can easily set your sights to correctly align with the (given) distance. From then on (when using milspec ammunition) you're always on or, as they say, you're GTG.
