Norinco m305 shorty advice needed

Hey guys I'm relatively new to the world of CGN but loving it. I always wanted a m14 so I finally broke down and bought a norinco 305 shorty. Still awaiting arrival. I've been doing alot of research and see people have had a few issues. So I'm gonna ask the experts. What should I check for defects outta the box? I wanna have a reliable weapon that is fairly accurate and shoots surplus and commercial ammo. Also what mods should I do to make this happen. I've read about barrel indexing and headspace issues and I'm just unclear on how to look for it.

I also just bought one a few weeks ago. I stripped her down, cleaned her up and oiled all parts that the book said. Shot it the next day and everything worked fine. Shoots fairly straight as I am trying to get use to the irons. I haven't ran into any problems really other then needing a few shims for the gas cylinder.
 
You missed my Calgary, AB clinic in TSE 11 July. I swung through Lloyd on 15 July on my way to the Dundurn, SK M14 clinic. Bummer. No sweat.

Clean it all off, feel for rattling (op rod guide is easy to fix), grease up : bolt, bolt lugs, bolt raceways, op rod track, hammer face/nose, and op rod guide.

Youtube vids are plentiful and so are the FAQ's at the top of this forum. Get reading and learning. It's all good.
