Norinco M37 for HD

I wouldn't trust my life on one. There have been mostly negative reviews of them. I don't know why anyone would buy one when you could pick up a used Ithaca M37 for $200 and cut the barrel down to 18".

18.5 is the shortest if you do it "after factory"

That's incorrect. For semi-autos it is 18.5". For everything else it's 18.0". But 18.5" gives you some wiggle room if the Mounties have a s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d measuring tape.

Why 18.5" for semis, you ask? There is no good reason, except bureacracy and BS. But regardless - it is the law.

Regarding the Norinco M37 - I'll second the opinion that you'd get better quality and reliability by buying a used REAL M37 on the EE, and shortening the barrel. And there are gunsmiths who will work on a real Ithaca M37, but not so many that will waste time on a disposable Norinco.

In fact, if you want an even better shotgun, look for a used JC Higgins model 20. They show up on the EE in the $150-$200 range. These were made by High Standard and they use exactly the same all-steel, heavy duty action as the High Standard police model, which was very well made and quite highly regarded in the day. IMO far superior to the more cheaply manufactured modern shotguns like the Maverick, Mossy 500 and Rem express. And light years better than a norcy m37. IMO of course.

well i happen to own an HP9 (norinco 870 clone) and an Ithaca M37, Rem wingmaster, and a mossberg. i shoot skeet and trap regularly, and just for the hell of it i tried my nork a couple weekends ago. I can say it did over 200 rounds of ammo before my shoulder said enough, the only thing i didnt like is when i caught my pinky finger in the slide it hurt like hell, but as for function it was flawless, my brother was using the mossberg and he got one shell stuck in the chamber, but that was minor. the nork is well worth the money you pay.

Is this shotgun reliable as a primary HD weapon?

I own the Norinco Model 37 clone and hate it. Look under the Gunsmithing area for my post if interested. It has never fed properly from day one. I had a smith go over it and it still sucks. Money out the window.

I wish I bought mine from Marstar, then I could have relied on their warranty. As it was, Leverarms was the only ones carriying them a few years back and they had no warranty.

Mine fails to feed every 3rd or 4th round. Make me an offer and you can fight with it yourself.

The OP wasn't talking about the HP9. I have a norinco M305 and dont have any problems with it, and have heard mostly positiive about the HP9 shotgun. The Ithaca clone on the other hand is known to have issues.

I've owned the M37 sold it for something I liked better and have to say get the M37 and get it cut down for sure worked great never had a jam nice action and you always know where the empty lands (tilt it up and it lands near the bad guy's body Hypothetically speaking of course). Used M37's are cheap well made and if you can find one with a second barrel you have a great hunting gun in 2 minutes like I did. If I could find a Cheap M37 again and had money in the pocket at the same time I'd grab it up without a hesitation. Now the New M37....they too are nice by PRICEEEEE.

Cheers
