We shot a new NP29 today using the Norinco mags. They only accept 4 rounds and then bind.

I don't think it is a OAL issue, but will investigate.

I wanted to take the floor plate off and polish the insides, but the floorplate appears to be welded in place.

Anyone else have this issue?

Edit: When I push the follower up and down with a pencil, it seems to run fairly smoothly. But when I shove rounds in the mag, it hangs up after round #4. This is on 4 out of 4 mags. Geologist makes 5. I hope someone mechanically inclined can figure out what is binding and how and what to polish.

I tested my gun with a MecGar mag, and that worked just fine.

Same with my Marstar purchased (~2007/2008) NP-29 magazine. It's like there is a burr on the floorplate or the magazine body. I just use Mecgars which work great and use the 4 round Norc OEM mag for a-zooms.

To strip a 1911 mag with a fixed floor plate you depress the follower with a plastic pen or such then slide a small metal rod [I use a piece of steel coat hanger cut off to about 4"] thru the side witness holes to hold the mag spring. With the mag spring held, you should then be able to wiggle the mag follower out thru the top of the mag tube.

Once that is out the mag spring can be then removed. You can then inspect the parts to see what the issue is.

NAA.

really?!? good to know, dont think I would have thought of that, just thought the welded plate were "throw away" cheap mags.

Granderite, if you can push the follower down all the way with a pencil, then maybe it is your reloads. did you try factory loads??

if thats not it then I have no idea

Pushed follower down with pencil. Pushed a small screwdriver across, through the holes to take pressure off follower. Was able to pull follower out. It has a sharp edge on front side lip that binds in the square notch for the pistol release latch.

I am round it off a bit and hope that will work. Being called for dinner. Stay tuned.

OK: The mag now loads just fine. I used a file to take about 1 mm of material off the front and side of the front follower. This is the edge that would engage the square notch cut out.
