The safety/decocker drops the hammer without striking the firing pin. Here's what to do:
1. With safety/decocker in Fire position (red showing) insert loaded magazine and rack the slide to chamber a round.
2. Move safety/decocker to Safe position (white showing.) The hammer will drop smartly but the gun will not fire. If you pull the trigger the hammer will not recock. The gun is on safe.
3. Move the safety/decocker back to Fire. Remember, there is a loaded round in the chamber. The gun can now be fired in double action mode. That is, pulling the trigger recocks, then drops the hammer with the firing pin in position. The double action trigger pull is fairly heavy.
4. After the gun fires it will chamber another round and the hammer will move back to the cocked position. The gun can now be fired single action. In other words, pulling the trigger drops the already cocked hammer and "bang." The single action pull is fairly light. You can now keep firing until the magazine is empty, at which point the slide locks back.
The advantage of this is that a round can be kept in the chamber with the hammer down. To fire the gun all you need to do is pull the trigger. (I don't recommend this for normal use, but you can see the advantage as a duty pistol.)
When you do Step 2 you may think that the gun would fire. The hammer really snaps down. But it is not striking the firing pin.
Do not learn this procedure at home using live ammunition! Use an unmarked snap cap until you're sure you know how it works. Do it again at the range when you can safely use live ammo.
