Rumor has it that Norinco is paying royalties to Colt for the 1911, what say you?
Ivor

Rumor would be the word, not many rumors are true, unless of course you heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who.....

More twisted chit than that has happened......apparently the Chinese actually got the original blueprints off of the Americans for the m14.
I do call bs as well, but weirder stuff Then that actually goes on every day.
Ivor

Patents have a certain lifespan and do expire. Once it expires you can make the product without paying any royalties. Copyright is different and can be renewed.

You think theres a coincidence there are hundreds of companies making the 1911 in US or the AR-15 variants? Notice they dont call them AR-15, as that name is Copyrighted to Colt i believe, but the actual original Armalite M16 patent has expired.

So no, Norinco aint paying #### to anyone for manufacturing 1911s, and even if the patent WAS valid, they would still make them, they just wouldnt be able to sell them here, IF, the original Patent holder took them to court and the Canadian courts sided with the patent holder.

Yes, I'm fully aware of patent law. As stated earlier, I don't believe that they're paying royalties either. But unlike most other companies, Norincois making mechanical copies of the 1911A1, aAnd calling them such. Most other companies are making a variation on the theme.
Ivor

I'm actually hoping that someone chimes in with actual proof to debunk this one.
Ivor

China does not pay royalties. Nor do they care. Here's an example for you; China has chemotherapy drugs for it's citizens. There is only one producer of chemotherapy drugs in the world, and they have never done any business with China. China doesn't care about your capitalist BS, they need what they want and aren't afraid to steal, cheat and copy to get ahead. I mean really, what are you going to do, sue China?

100% true. The United States of America sold all the blueprints and tooling to Taiwan after they shut down the M14 manufacturing plants. All our M305s are built on that same tooling. Machines, jigs, fixtures etc.

the one and only time Norinco has faced off over patent laws was over the SIG 228s (or 229s?) That's one of the reasons they aren't allowed in the USA, in Canada it made no difference, but then our laws changed and the compact gun market died.

That's interesting. If true, and I believe you, that means that our M305s ARE actually M14s (albeit without full auto)...and all the haters have just been pwned.

They commies don't pay royalties to no one, lol such an obvious answer, why ask the question??

Taiwan - Republic of China - is not the Peoples Republic of China. ROC does not share defence technology with PRC.

A number of patents relating to the 1911 pistol were issued to the Brownings. Those patents expired loooong ago.

Devils advocate:
When colt stopped manufacturing the 1911A1 in the 70's, they also changed over to New tooling. Then in the 80's they realized that people whern't too happy with the series 70, and they're lawyers where even less happy that it wasn't more idiot proof. Hence the series 80.
Where did the tooling go that used to make the old 1911A1's? Was there a cost to obtaining that machinery?
Ivor

Ivor, can you prove that I am not paying patent royalties to Colt for my guns? Typically in these situations you need to prove your side, that in fact royalties are being paid.

They did and they bought the tooling from them because they dumped it as a rifle. Now they brought it back and it's made with the new machines.
