I have a SKS-D with serial number 0264### and I am wonder if there is a site where I can look it up? I want to see when it was made and if it has a pinned barrel.

Your "D" uses the PRC commercial numbering system indicating 2002 production. D has a pinned barrel.

The SKS "D" is not an official military arm (although I have pictures of it being used by Bangladeshi UN forces in Africa - probably the only military user) and was designed originally for the US commercial market. It's receiver is of different design than the military model with fixed magazine.

Are you sure that's not the Type 56 (or what ever the name is)?

Type 56 is the ordinary SKS (Type 56 "SMG" -Chinese designation- is the AK. Item in my pics is not A T63/T68.
I'll search my files and post when I find them.

My mistake, the correct designation is the Type 68. It looks a lot like the SKS D.

The SKS D has never been issued to a military. It is a comercial only firearm.

An SKS-D used by UN maybe but why would you use such a piece of ####? Those things are junk at best! But I guess someone thought it would look cool. Are you sur you did not mistake it for an AK?

I don't think I did...
Those are some harsh words about the SKS, but it's your opinion. I would like to remind you that the classic version is still used by many countries(and conflicts) around the world. Even if the SKS D was intended for the North American market, I wouldn't be too sure that ALL Norinco SKS's actually reached their intended customers.
Somewhat off topic...but check out the friendly fellow on the bike, with his Yugo SKS(early-mid 1990s)...he seems happy enough:D

They keey word here is "issued". In todays conflicts any firearm can pop up. How ever, the SKS D has not likely been issued to a military unit as it is a sporting arm, never meant for military use.

There are many other SKS variants that you may have seen.

Junk

How can you say they are junk at best??? At least you don't have to load it one round at a time from the top. Its a lot easier to unload as well. And yeah they look pretty cool too with a big 30rnd or 100rnd drum in her.

I'd bet that anyone familiar with their sks could load and unload faster than you with your D. If you think you can rock one of those mags into place and chamber a round faster than slapping five rounds off a stripper into the already locked back bolt on my sks you're crazy.
