Hi, I recently bought a brand new, in grease norinco sks. I brought it out to the range for the first time today and noticed that every second or third shot fails to fire due to light primer strikes. The ones that fail to fire usually go boom on thier second time though. How should I fix this problem?

Second, the pin at the back of the reciever to take apart the action will not come out far enough for me to be able to take the action apart. I have tried many different methods to get it out, but cant seem to do it.

If anyone can help me out, it is appreciated.

Did you clean the gun completely before you head out to the range? Did you take the firing pin apart and clean it well? A new gun needs some time to break in.

Strip the carbine down into it's main components. Using bore solvent, clean and remove all of the grease from it.

Your failure to fire is one of 3 possible issues:

1. Grease in the firing pin channel. Strip the bolt, then clean all grease with solvent. If you cannot properly and safely strip it, then immerse it in bore cleaner for some time. Clean and dry. In cold outside temps, the grease has turned into concrete. Your fortunate it didn't freeze up with the pin fully forward and burp off on you. In cold weather, your firearm should be absolutely dry, with no oils or grease in the operating mechanism, gas system, trigger mech, etc.

2. Bolt is not closing fully.

3. Change ammunition, in case you have defective primers with your current lot.

There is a sticky at the top of the Red Rifles Page. Check them out. Everything you need to know on how to safely strip, assemble and operate them is there....

cote: you have one possibilty bcos you couldnt open the action , therefore you never cleaned the bolt before taking it to the range .

i would wiggle the top cover latch out about half an inch then use a long square wood or plastic and wedge it for leverage, dont use too much force or you will bend the latch.

if that dont work then remove the wood stock and soak the back end of the receiver in some sort of solvent (heat might also work, use a hair dryer) and then try the wiggle technique again.... good luck .

:agree:

The cover is under tension from the spring inside. Using your thumb push the cover ahead a little while at the same time wiggling the pin out.

As mentioned, clean the firing pin and bolt completely. DO NOT oil the firing pin, it must be dry, and should rattle loosly when shaken.

oh yeah, thanks G , i forgot the thumb action . :)

Alright, thanks guys. I degeased it really well when i was assembling it for the first time, but since then, that stupid pin wont come out. Ill try again though. Ill check to make sure the bolt is closing fully each time from now on.

The good news is that so far Ive found it to be pretty accurate.

so you got the top cover openned before. still try the wiggle and thumb technique and use a wood or even a pen as leverage .

when ever i hear a fail to fire on a new SKS , its usually fail to clean the bolt thoroughly.

I had a similar problem with a batch of old czech surplus ammo I had bought. A bunch of it was 1978 production and fired fine everytime, the rest of it was stamped 1963 and I had lots of misfires with this older stuff, almost every 2nd or 3rd bullet wouldn't fire, but when I ejected these bullets and loaded them back in they'd all fire on the second go. I haven't had a problem with any other ammo, commercial or surplus, just the '63 batch i had. I'm pretty sure it was an issue with the ammo itself, and not my gun...perhaps it's your ammo too?
