Looking for a shotgun to replace my rather cranky old 500. This is a bear defence gun, I want ghost ring sights and I like the Moss 500 for it’s lightweight. Brand new it would be $300 and then the cost of the sights.

Saw the ad on Marstar for the Norinco YL-12-IJZ tactical 870 clone for $229. Now I am seriously considering this gun. A set of ghost ring sights for a 500 will cost me around $100. However I did try the standard version of this gun and found the action a bit chunky. Anyone have this gun and can give me an opinion?

Also don’t know if I want a pistol grip when firing 3” slugs

I don't have the gun, but I'm pretty sure it's based on the Ithaca 37, not the 870. I've read nice things about it, a few people around have them

I have the standard one, it is based on the Ithaca model 37, same as the tactical, not based on the 870.

Pistol grips are over rated and not really endorsed by the 'home defense shottie gurus" from what I could find.

though the Norc might look good and be fun at the range, I'd hate to explan to the bear charging me that my gun won't cycle because I oppted to by the cheapest shotgun I could find!!! the moss 500 is a proven platform I would trust my life to, norico is not. my2c

cheers,

I hear what your saying, but I don't want to spend my car payment of a gun that can be bought for less money. I also hear that a lot when I shoot IPSC with my other Norinco. I can still turn bullets into brass and shoot gun sells into trash with the Norinco shotgun. ;)

I understand. I own a few norcs myself. they funtion and perform on par with the rest of em. but seeing how this is a life or mauling question, I'd pick a moss 500 anyday. again, just my a$$ I'm thinking about.

Cheers,

IMHO - it's not for bear defence. Too Heavy, not reliable. If you really think you need something for bear defence, and value your life, consider spending a little more (or get something used & reliable for less).

Read the Norinco HP-9 post that is going on right now. If you like the norinco copy get the real brand name version. It is only $100-200 more and will last a life time. Also parts are made to spec. and available. Mossberg and Remington rock!!!!!!

I would say pass on the NORC. How many MIL or LEO agencies are using norinco?............ RIght, NONE. Buy the real Mccoy, the Mossy. If that doesn't suit your tastes than buy a remington, not an NP9 by NORC a REMINGTON.

Why not just get a Maverick if you're bound and determined to save money? 200 bucks and you're good to go - still only 300 if you put sights on it.

They're known reliable performers, they're a lot lighter than the norinco's, and it's still a mossberg for all intents and purposes.

If you can't afford new, look for a used one in good shape. A good M37 Ithaca isn't hard to find. Sorry, but a Norinco shotgun is the LAST thing I would spend my hard-earned money on.

Just received a full refund from Marstar for a Norinco YL 12-1 M-37 "Tactical" that wouldn't chamber 2 3/4" shells due to a number of manufacturing issues. The fit and finish was horrible, but could have been tolerated if the gun actually worked. May have been the in 1 in a million lemon... but I suspect not ;-)
