On my SKS that I bought I have cleaned every crevasse of cosmoline and while giving all the parts a once over I noticed the Piston rod doesn't slide that far out of the gas cylinder. The rod smoothly glides out about 1 1/8 inches before it abruptly stops and becomes to wedged to go out any farther. Is this normal for an SKS, or will i have to take off material of the rod?

It comes out the other end for removal, though I'm going to assume you probably know that :). That's all she wrote as far as protrusion at the small end. You're good to go.

For clarity, the main piston just whacks the operating rod (or whatever fancy words one might want to use) that is inside the rear sight block. You'll find it can only travel rearward around an inch or so, no reason for the piston to travel any further.
