Got a quick story and some photos
Me and my father decided to go out for a quick three coyote stands this morning and he had an adventure he will never forget.
The first two stands came up with nothing and we decided to go try an old farmyard that just looks like coyotes would hang around. Well I got settled in by an old combine and dad sat down by an old truck.
I blew on the mouth call two quick times and seen something stand up about 300 yards away in the brush. I gave about 4-5 more quick chirps and he bolted towards us. I lost site of him and he showed back up about 130 yards away on a rise with some rocks and sat down. I gave a few squeezes on the coaxer and he was running again. The way the hill in front of me was I lost him shortly after he started comming again, all I knew was me or dad were going to get a shot and it was going to be close.
I waited a bit and gave a couple quiet squeeks and then I seen some ears bouncing to my right. He popped up about 12 steps infront of dad and then "boom" He hit it low in the leg and it started spinning then he fired again, I assumed miss as the coyote didn't even react to the second shot. Then he started to run and I lost site of him as there was equipment and fence posts bundles between us then "boom". I stood up only to see dad falling backwards with his gun out with one hand and a coyote about three feet from the muzzle. Dad had this look of an adrenaline filled did that **** just happen. It turns out that he never saw the coyote untill it was that 12 steps away it had used the low spots of the hills that dad couldn't see. He though I was having trouble with the call freezing up thats why I had stopped so quick after starting. I thought he was jumping back from the coyote but he said when he was standing up as it was coming at him he lost his footing on the sloped bank behind him and fell backwards. After I got the story and he calmed down I grabbed the coyote to see what had happened. The first shot was low in the leg (no surprise we figured that) but the shocker was the second shot was a broadside pass through that left a baseball sized exit and the dog didn't react to the hit and came right for dad (you could see inside the chest and there was nothing left) Earned alot of respect for coyotes today after watching what it did. It took 3 shots from a .270 win before he called it quits the longest of 12 steps. It is a great spot on a hill that over looks a large opening with trees and brush on the far side. The coyote took the only route possible that he could for dad not to see him I had numerous shots at him all the way in but I always like to see how close I can get them but I won't tell dad that one
After it happened I asked him if he was practicing for cape buffalo he just laughed then I reminded him when I said one of us should carry a shotgun and the other the rifle and he thought that was a dumb idea we will never get one that close
I think he might change his opinion on that one.
Now the photos.
A reproduced scene of what I stood up to see
Better look at the coyote my father is on the right and beside his right shoulder in the distance is the brush that he was bedded in.
My spelling and grammer suck and Iam a lousy story teller but I thought you guys and gals would like this one.
