My brother is a prospector and wants a rifle for multi purpose use, hunting in the south, hunting in the north, bear defense in the north, and general rifle. He really wants a T3 stainless left hand in .30-06, but they don't come with iron sights, which is kinda necessary. I have not seen many add on open sights that would fit the bill ie very very rugged and mountable on said rifle. Any suggestions?
 
It is not difficult to add good irons to a rifle. Get a NECG front and rear set from Brownell's, have a 'smith drill and tap, and your rifle is ready for bear, for much less $ than a scope and mounts.
 
I've never viewed the T3 as a good Dangerous Game rifle...Wouldn't be my first choice.

I was once involved with a project involving guns for survival to be carrierd in aircraft. One of the participants was a prospector who had been attacked twice. he said the first thing he knew about the bear was when it knocked him ass over teakettle. His point was that the gun on the ATV would not do much good. It had to be on his hip.

The type of defense weapon would depebd on how one was exposed. Bears are hard to stop when they are attacking. Lots of muscle, fat and bone. The flat forehead tend to deflect frontal head shots.

He stopped one with a shot in the mouth. Throat funneled the bullet to the spine.

Consesnus was that the best long gun was a 12 ga with slugs. Sabots, I assume.

The old wives tale about bullets bouncing off the skulls of bears is best left for around the fire where you can scare little kids and Liberals, they have no basis in fact or real hunting.
 
I put a 180 grain into the head of a 425 lb black bear and it actually tore the skull cap right off. Worst way to ruin a rug. Had to do a headless rug with claws. One of those chance encounters while actually out hunting bears. I saw it at about 70 yards. Then lost sight of it in the brush. When I saw it again it was at 20 yards and walking towards me kind of fast. So in hindsight, I don't think any other shot was gonna be as effective in hindsight. The bullet was a federal factory load .300 win mag using 180 gr Speer Hot-Cor's.
So , in that particular instance, there was no bouncing off of foreheads. It went straight through and took the top of the head with it. Kinda gruesome looking carcass. Anyone else think that a skinned bear kinda looks like a human??
 
I know of a case,personal hunting partner; had 2 shots go off a griz. skull taking a small piece of fur each time. The fact he had an old Marlin in 3855 had a lot to do with it,but, I have seen him make that same shot on 2 blacks . Each died instantly. My .02 AJ
