My opa just lent me a 1944 Krag he was given years back. This thing looks amazing and it's got nazi stampings all over it. Bore looks fantastic, metal is fantastic and the wood is pretty damn good also. I wanna shoot this thing, should I or should I leave it how it is?

Here's the pictures, too lazy to crop out the carpet :p Any chance anyone would know why there's some black marks at the end of the stock?

this his a really sweet rifle you are extremely lucky to have it. I wish my parent or some one in my family would have stuff like that.

Good luck whit it!

"...black marks..." Could be oil stains or water stains. I'd bet on water. The rifle may have been leaning in a corner on a wet spot. The stock sucked up water just like a tree will. Goes black due to mould forming. Is it soft to the touch?

The stains are from the butt plate getting rusty then the water wicks up into the grain carrying the colour from the rust.

What you have is a sporterized Norwegian Stomperud Krag. The Barrel is shorter than the long rifles. It’s about the same length as the K98 and came both as a 6,5 mm and a "soft" 7,92 for the really brave ones. These are rather scarce, are all produced in 1944 and have serial numbers between Nc 673 and Nc 1095.

Many of the KJ produced under the German occupation were "bastards". Some only "a little" off like putting M1912 bolts on M1894 rifles, some really weird like the almost un-numbered M1930.
In 1946-1951 there were made almost 1600 of the Stomperud Krag. Most of these were built from used parts and they might have all kinds of strange markings - for instance a Steyr receiver dated 1944 (almost 50 years after Steyr stopped producing Krag's). These were civilian rifles to be sold to the public, but with bayonet lug.

Here's a pict of what it looked like before they were sold to the sporting market. BTW they are slick to shoot. Holds 6 rd. They were designed to use the 160gr roundnose bullets.
