no need to be, a 180 gr. Ballistic Tip will hit hard, expand fast, and create good damage, but it will have enough weight to penetrate enough on deer. Should create quite the "splash" on impact.

If you were hunting moose or elk I'd suggest a tougher bullet, but for deer you should be fine.

I have killed 8 elk and 2 moose using the 180gr ballistic tip out of my 300ultramags.The muzzle velocity was 3340fps.Only one bullet was recovered and it retained 60% of it's weight after passing through both shoulders of a mature elk.However after trying the 180gr tsx in my ultramags ,I discovered that they are just as accurate as the ballistic tip but with better penetration and weight retension.As such I now use only the tsx in my ultramags.I still use the 140gr ballistic tip in my 7mmstws for deer and they have done a fine job on over two dozen deer,a few pronghorns and a bighorn.I also used the 100gr ballistic tip to take about a dozen deer and a couple of pronghorn with my 257wby.I have never had a bullet failure from a ballistic tip.
