Ok folks I`m looking for some opinions on two boolits for hunting purpouses with my Marlin 45-70. I am casting a 405gr HB and am considering that as well but what my main question is; If you had to choose between two .458 boolits which would you choose?
First is the Nosler Partition and second is the Hornady Flex Tip.
I will be going iron sights for now maybe a low powder scope later on.
So what do ya think?

The Partition is not needed at the velocities the 45-70 launches bullets at. This is probably one of the reasons Nosler has discontinued the Partition in the calibre.

The FTX is very accurate in my Marlin and the bullet does make it a bona-fide 200 yard cartridge. Sited in 2" high at 100 the bullet hits 3"-4" low at 200, more than good enough for me. The big question will be how the bullet performs on game but in truth I don't anticipate any problems.

The 300grain Nolser Parition is one of the best bullets ever made for 45/70 hunters. Its not a typical hollow point like hornady, seirra, or remington, 300 grain bullets, and can be used on large Elk, Moose sized game. The little 300grain Nolser actually out penetrates many 400grain bullets including speer, remington, and A-frame. Tested by Brain Piearce. If you can find the Noslers buy them and use a 300grain cast or cheap remington for practice and then just save them for hunting. I know lots of guys who have used them here in NA and Africa with great results.

The 325 Hornady thing is best suited for deer size game. I wouldn't hunt anything bigger with it. Although their 350 RN and FN are good for all NA hunting.

Good luck

I will be carrying a .45/70 this fall as well. My bullet will be the one I practice with. My choice is a cast 405 grain hollowpoint bullet from a Lee mold. It will reach out to 500 yards and penetrate 1/8" plate, but for hunting whitetail I will keep it inside 200. Velocity is 1166 fps out of my H & R Buffalo Classic.
