Not just what scope for 3 Gun. How would you use it?

There are plenty of threads here and elsewhere on 'what's the best scope for my AR-15". This thread is related to that topic but not just that simple.

I have 2 ARs. One has a 4x Elcan on it, identical to the scope I've shot in the army since the C7 was first issued. I've shot this combination in 3 gun matches here in Halifax (we have about 3 a year, give or take) with some satisfaction.

Enter my new AR. I bought (and love) a 10.5 NEA for fun and possible 3 Gun use (yes it's short - let's not go there for the moment). I currently have a Sparq red dot on top of it. Nice little combination but I find I cannot hold a tight point of aim on anything past 10 yards. It's great for close in, run and gun targets. I can hold it steady with a rest like the edge of a barricade, out further but I'm not happy trying to rest a glowing red dot on a target at 200m away. I don't have any sense of the required hold over and there is no way to dial in the distance in the middle of a stage.

So I'm looking for new glass for the NEA. I'm currently looking at a Hi-Lux CMR. It's well within my price range. I can put it on a P.E.P.R. mount to allow me to move it between the two ARs if I want, and I really like the reticle. There are better quality scopes out there but I don't like the reticles. There are better quality scopes out there with reticles that can be used for bullet drop compensation but I'm not keen on spending almost $2,000 for a scope for this rifle/application.

Now down to my question. Some (most) of the higher end 1-4 tactical scopes do not have a reticle designed to allow hold over. The Leupold and the Sightron scopes look great on the outside, specs and reputation but I don't care for the reticle. How are people using these for 3 Gun or other action shooting? Do you dial in the elevation for each range while you're moving between stages or firing points? Do you just visually remember (or note down) the hold over sight picture for each range? Do you zero it in for 100 yards, recognize that since the IPSC target has a relatively tall A zone and just hope you get lucky when you're shooting clay pigeons at 150 yards?

The question comes down to, how to you use that tactical scope of yours when shooting 3 Gun and how does that affect, or neglect, your choice of reticle?

Thanks for your help.

TA11G ACOG with a side optic is my rig right now.. Your not going to see much farther than the doughnut will range for. Swarzovki 1-6 with BRT reticle is the cats meow if you can afford it. There is no comparison to anything. The Vortex 1-6 comes close only based on its price.
