031, I'm not trying to diswade you from getting into the long range shooting, It is a great sport and challenge. You say you have never owned a bolt action rifle before and I'm assuming all this is new to you. This is just a suggestion on my part if I am reading you right in assuming you are fairly new to the shooting game and am going to make a suggestion that you try to get out with someone who is into the long range thing and get a feel for how it is done and if it truely appeals to you. It's not a matter of buying a rifle and a good scope and base and bingo your shooting 1000 yrds consistantly. You can waste a great deal of money on things going into this blind. Get down to you gun club and meet people that are into this and can help you out.

This is not intended as an insult, but I'm going to recomend you try something in a .22 LR bolt gun to get started, it is the best way to get your shooting skill basics down, hold, breathing, cheek weld, and great for simulating LR shots at 150-200 yrds, if you can do it there with a .22 you can do it at 1000+ with other rifles, and not just for learning, I still use mine on a regular basis to practice the fundementals. Or if you want to have the ability to hit 1000yrds, maybe .223 you wont develope a flinch, there is a wide variety of ammo available and you won't have to spend a big dollar.

The Savage rifles are great out of the box, as are the Remingtons. Just do your homework before you invest a large dollar that may leave you disapointed. Read the threads in this catagory there is a lot of good info on this board to get a start and alot of good people who can point you in the right direction to make this a great sport for you.

Very good advice from L R Cannuck. Nothing teaches you about shooting like pulling the trigger. If you are still looking at buying a rifle, bases and scope combination you might want to consider the formula I use in my store. For every dollar you have in you budget spend 40 cents on the rifle, fifty cents on the scope and 10 cents on the rings and bases. Most buyers over spend on the gun and not on what really counts.

You don't mention if the long range shooting you want to try is target shooting, or something like varmint hunting. If its the former, contact your Provincial Rifle Association, and get out to a range before you spend any money. Links can be found at www.dcra.ca
