Awwww idnit cute!

So now here I sit not sure why I spent $250 on a scope.
So now I need yer help. Now I'm lookin for a rifle to fit under that new scope. I'm some what on a buget, say in and a round $500/$550. Two of the rifles I looked at at whole sale was the Stevens 200 in a .30/06, I had inquired about it in a .25/06 but they told me that they'd have to order it in and could be a couple of month wait for it to get in. The other rifle I looked at was the Remington SPS or was it the SPF, I can't remember, in a .270. Now I've heard mostly good things about the Stevens but haven't seen much on the Remington. What say you guy's on the Remington and the .25/06 and the .270 calibers, and yup I did see the .270 thread and I also gave up on the search function some time ago. What I did notice between the two rifles was the actions, the Remington was, to me, a fair bit smoother.
The main uses for this rifle would be for deer sized game and under.
Now the little voices in my head say just get it in the .30/06 (now I do know that it is a good all around caliber and can be had any where's) and stop fussing over it but..... Oh my there's just waaaay to many choices and so little money and time, what's a guy to do!!:(

Thanks for the time to answer this noob's questions and putting up with another possible opened can O werms.
Russ

Edited to add: I forgot to mention that at some point I do plan on getting set up for reloading

The SPS is a nicer rifle than the Stevens 200. So is the Weatherby Vanguard, both sell for 500 bucks. Between the 3, I personally like the Vanguard the best. I like the extractor on it the best out of the 3 mentioned. Get either a 270 or 30-06, whichever floats your boat.

I'd also say go with the SPS.... there are a lot of after market goodies you can get for Remington 700s. If you only plan on using the rifle for deer / antelope sized critters, I'd probably go with a 270. The 30-06 would have the advantage on larger animals and there is a greater selection of factory ammo for it though. The 270 is a good long range deer round with a bit less recoil than the good old '06.

The good thing about the SPS is that someday down the road you can upgrade the stock to a McMillan or similar fiberglass stock, and you will never want for another 270.

The Vanguard or the Stevens don't give you this option.

.

Yeah... and by the time you have spent the money on a decent trigger and stock for the SPS you could have bought a Tikka T-3 in a Stainless Laminate...
Get something decent, by the way what power is the Elite?

Yes, but the going the SPS route will cost alot less to get the intial rifle with the upgrades later when the funds pemit, and the 700/McMillan combo will probably weigh a fair bit less than the Tikka.

Side Question ...... What is wrong with the triggers on the SPSs?

They will end up weighing about the same Super and the Tikka is Stainless. The Remington triggers can be tweaked to make them decent... But the Tikka trigger is much better and very easy to adjust if you must.
All you have to do is work the bolt on a SPS and then a TIkka to see the difference in these two rifles... like comparing Smoothy to Chunky peanut butter.
In the end run you will spend the same on a better rifle buying the Tikka.

Another Vote for the Rem 700 SPS

I've owned both rifles, so between a Stevens 200 and a Rem 700 SPS, I'd take the Rem SPS. And that is a nice scope BTW...

:D Good call Redd, I am by no means a bolt action fan, but the two Tikka's I have owned in the past had the smoothest bolt I have ever seen. If I was to ever buy another bolt action gun, Tikka is the only one I would buy.

smoothest bolt I have ever seen.
If we're going to throw stuff out there, how about a Steyr-Mannlicher.;)
Of the 2 rifles you are looking at, I'm with SC on this. Go with the Remington SPS, it's a few $ more than a Stevens 200, but it is easily used to build up.

You would be hard pressed to beat the t-3 in 25-06 for deer sized game.It will kill any deer that walks and shoots slightly flatter than the 270win with slightly less recoil.

A good trigger breaks without apparent movement. I consider Remington's trigger superior to Tikka's, because the Tikka can be adjusted for weight but not for travel. I sold my Tikka Continental because there was no apparent way to adjust out the irritating movement the trigger made before it broke. Undoubtedly the trigger was reason that very handsome rifle was put up for sale when I bought it, and although he doesn't admit it, the fellow I sold it to, sold it because, despite claims to the contrary, he was unable to master the trigger.

Any of the calibers you have mentioned - .25-06, .270, or the .30-06 will harvest deer sized animals very nicely. The former two shoot slightly flatter than the .30-06, but the .30-06 has a slight advantage on larger game. One cartridge you did not mention was the .280 Remington, a cartridge of impressive ballistics, that splits the difference between the .270 and the .30-06. Some think the .280 pointless, others think it provides .30-06 power with a .270's trajectory - Townsend Whelen believed it superior to both the .270 and the .30-06.

Now that they are on the endangered species list, I personally would seek out a Winchester M-70 Super Grade in .30-06.

The scope is a Bushnell Elite 32000 3x9x40.
And like wow guys! Thanks for all the info!
Looks like that I can't go wrong with the Remington,so now I'll sneek away from werk tomorrow and swing buy Whole Sale and put some money down on my new hunting rifle!:D

I vote for the Remington, Tikka is a nice rifle if you like lots of plastic and that "expensive if you lose it and can't load from the top magazine"
Plus there is way more after market stuff to add on to your favorite 700 as time and moolah allows.:D

270 Win

My father who hunted for over 50 years said to me, "Dont go into the bush with anything less than a .270."
I have made some pretty good shots with the Brno 270 of Dad's and I seen him make some awesome long shots with it......

:dancingbanana: Mmkay so I sold my soul and used the money to hold a new rifle, the Remington 700sps in .270wsm and also picked up a set of leupold rings and bases. Now al I need to do is wait for pay day this coming week so I can go and pick'er up in time for the weekend!:dancingbanana:
Sooo What do y'all suggest for rounds say for deer and yote's?
