I am going deer hunting next week and want to use my Marlin 1895 GBL with 405 grain soft points. I realize I can use 300 grain but would 405 grain cause too much damage? I don't care about the recoil or any opinions on what's a better idea I just want to know if I will do too much damage to the meat. Hopefully someone has experience trying this. Thanks!

If anything the 405 will likely do LESS damage, it is a great weight for the 45-70. Where you poke your deer will determine meat loss much more than 300 vs 405. Go bang a big one and don't give it another thought !!!

+1. The heavier bullet will have less velocity and that is what does the damage, not bullet weight.

Like others have stated , velocity is a major influence on damage.

Also, bullet construction is far more relevant to damage than weight.

90gr .243 ballistic tip vs 405gr .45cal. solid, that is an easy formula to figure out damage.
