Im pretty proud of myself. Over the last few months I've been making the transition from urban student to rural, well, non student - and in the process expanding my inventory, and knowledge, of firearms and reloading gear.

What started as a Mec 600jr a trap instructor sold me is now a respectable, if still beginning, setup for reloading in 12ga, soon to also reload for .30-06.

Last week, I found a local auto scrapper who was more than happy for me to cart away his bucket of wheel weights for $20. The week before that, I'd bought a MSR Whisperlite Omni-fuel stove and put it to use melting down and purifying the lead. It worked like a charm; about 20oz of kerosine saw the lot melted down - all but two or three of the individual weights were lead - and poured into ingots.

Today, on my lunch break, I picked up my freshly delivered Lee 1oz Key Slug mould. Broke it in when I got home (though I had to fight with the stove, as I've switched to unleaded gas) and while the results aren't perfect, they're still pretty good. Time, practice and the right gear will yield even better results.

So now sitting on the table next to my laptop I've got six fully reloaded 2 3/4" shells - their no# 7 1/2 shot converted into slugs - they wont have the kick of a full fledged factory slug round; but that'll come later.

Its incredibly satisfying to make something as simple - but as practical - as these; knowing I've converted this material from useless scrap to purified metal stock to ready to go ammunition. I can't wait to get into it even more, maybe with pistol bullet casting... :p

yes ! congrats - Im ordering the same Lee 1oz Key Slug mould and will be melting lead down too.

PS I hope u got the safety gear - googles - mask - steel toes - gloves - apron

just in case ....

I just picked up my 1oz mold last weekend but with being so busy at work I havent had time to cast any slugs yet!

Sure have, though Im also using very small quantities at a time, so its fairly safe. Its also a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher nearby - so far, no accidents, no splashes, etc.

When melting down the wheel weights, I would do maybe a fistful at a time - wait for them to liquify, flux and scrape off the cross/clips - add another fistful, scrape - pour into two ingots, repeat. Maybe not the most fuel-efficient, but it kept the volume and weight manageable, and hence, safer.

I tested the rounds I loaded up this morning, in my 12ga Remington 870 with 28" barrel with mod choke. Worked like a charm - killed some 2L pop bottles very satisfactorily. Im hoping to chrony these converted rounds, which I've dubbed "Poor man's Zombie Medicine", sometime to figure out their stopping power. I love these slugs and I fully intend to take my first deer (if the deer's willing, that is) this autumn, hopefully having handloaded the entire round by then.

1oz key slugs are great and the cost is the best part... Factory slugs from Crappy tire are 1.00+ per round, my home cast and reloaded slugs are .25-.30 cents per round using free lead that I got from a friend.

The other thing that I like is the ability to make custom slugs depending on your target, lower powder charge for 25-50 yard laundry soap jug filled with water blasting with less recoil to shoot all afternoon or full power hunting loads if needed (I am not a hunter).

The next thing I want to do is fire up the drill press and try some hollow point slugs :)
