Now that Velocitors are unobtanium, what shells for varmints?

I would like to find a good all-around shell for my 10/22. I plan mostly on stalking groundhogs with it, but would like to have more jam if I get the chance to shoot a song dog up close - I don't plan on trying coyote hunting at 150 yards with a .22.

Anyway, I sighted the thing in for Velocitors, as they were the best round for hunting I could find a couple yrs ago, but I gave my last box away to my brother in law and can't find any more.

What commonly available shells (read: C-Tire) would be a good replacement bet? I don't think CCI is available anywhere close to me, so that rules out MiniMags and Stingers and so on .... think Remington or Winchester shells. Gag.

Don't want to sound like a goof, but have you considered using something with a little more "oomph" than 22lr? I hunt groundhogs all spring/summer long and unless the New Brunswick variety are allot smaller, less tough than Ontario ones...I'd want to be no more than about 50' from one using a 22lr. I hunt them with a .223, but spent a summer using 22WMR early-on. That caliber is up to the task out to 100-125 yards for sure.

To your question~you could try to track down CCI Segmented (high velocity) but check that high velocity rounds are OK in your 10/22. It'll shoot them, but I'm not sure Ruger recommends it.

SGB's a good choice. I was surprised but a couple of my 22's really like Yellow Jackets too. Worth a try.

Lebaron had bricks of CCI stingers for 59 for 500. Not a steal but good ammo

American Eagle HP, be aware that bricks are no longer 500 but rather 400 rounds per brick.
They may no be as fast, but they are devastating on gophers.

I have been saving the few boxes of Velociters that i have found. Still have several Stingers with $4.79 sticker on them. Dont know how old they are but they have been around a long time.

Yellow jackets would be my next pick over CCI.

Groundhogs are not gophers. Huge size difference there.

If your rifle will shoot them accurately I would go for Stingers or Yellow Jackets as long as it won't damage the gun.

They still make them, it's just nothing is available in Canada right now. All .22 ammo is hard to find for quite awhile now.

I've come across them from time to time over the last 2 years in places that I didn't expect to find them, but it doesn't take long for word to get out and it's gone.

I use Yellowjackets they seem to be a decent substitute now that stingers are hard to come by.

Stingers rock, but any ammo is only good if they shoot right out of your gun.
