I'm looking at picking up one of the Dominion Arms NP27s that CanAm will have on sale for Black Friday, but I have some questions as I am a 1911 noob.

Will pretty much any 1911 mags work with it (ie 7 and 8 rounders)? I'll probably pick up some Dlask mags for it and ditch the Chinese mags.

Is the only difference from the full size 1911 the length of the slide/barrel? Would a .22 conversion slide designed for a full size gun fit on the frame?

Would a holster designed for the full size gun work just as well with the commander length (assuming no issues with the squared off trigger guard vs round)? Specifically I'm looking at this one: http://www.zahal.org/products/imi-1911-variants-polymer-retention-holster?path_parent=275941

Thanks!

Its going to be trial and error. Fitting aftermarket anything on a norinco can require some labor, but not too much. 1911's are money pits because there are so many aftermarket parts for them. Good luck, watch some 1911 videos, the norincos are known to need frame polishing. Trigger bar polishing where it rubs against the frame,or you can shoot 5000 rounds thru it and it will smooth itself out. The np 27 is known to shoot low as the replica novak sights are not well made. A new set of sights will solve that problem, and chinese mags are not nice at all. Chip macormick makes nice 1911 mags. So a dremmel, polishing compound, set of sights and a couple of hours of labor will smooth it out, a nice sear polish will make the trigger feel very nice. To an experienced gunsmith its not a big deal, to a new shooter it could be challenging. Ive made norincos feel amazing, but ive had to polish the barrel, replace the extractor, firing pin spring and a few other parts. Complete mirror polish of the internals can take many , many ,many hours. At that point its not really a norinco anymore, its a custom build :) throw in a match barrel and its in another category. Its fun when your norinco feels and shoots better than an sti, but its a long ways there. Fun though.

NP27 frame is like a Commander frame. The only significant difference from a full length 1911 is the NP27's frame's dust cover is shorter to match the shorter slide,AFAIK.

Dimensionally, Norkies are as faithful to original JMBrowning specs as any other 1911 brand. Aftermarket match grade part always have to be fitted to any brand of 1911. Aftermarket drop in parts should drop into DAs or Norkies.

Well, Advantage Arms work on both lengths. The GSG conversion kit is designed for full sized (Gold Cup/Government/Combat Commander) 1911 frames (it will not fit the Officers/Titan sized frames), and it comes with the parts kit to work on both 70- and 80-series type 1911 pistols.

1911 mags fit. I still use the origina lNorc mags, in addition to some Chip Ms.

Most holsters work in both gov't and Commander lengths.

After market parts drop in. Some require a bit of fitting.

I would suggest you plan on a trigger job and a set of new sights.

I have found the 45's to be quite accurate. the 3 9mms I bought all had bad barrels.

It's a pretty stupid good price. I'm almost tempted, save that I know I'd end up selling it within 6 months..

For sights, do they follow any sort of standard dovetail?

Be careful with the sights. Some folks have had major difficulty as the Nork dovetails don't always follow standards. The other thing to be aware of is how tuff it can be to get the sights out of the dovetails. Some folks, myself included have used considerable force to remove them.

Aren't commanders by definition short slides on standard frames? I don't have one of these but wouldn't mind getting one are the dust covers actually shortened?

Honestly, for the price Can Am is blowing out those NP27's I'm tempted to get one myself. I'd say buy it with the 500 rounds of ammo combo, shoot the 500 rounds to get some range time and you'd probably be able to sell the pistol a year down the road for only a minor loss. It would be like a small rental fee to have used the gun for a while and then you can save up in the meantime for something better.

I just bought 2 combo's, depending on how you divide the price up! Say 50/50 for me taxes in, I paid )200 for the gun and 200 for the ammo!! Shipped, so 40 cents a round and a couple hundred bucks for the .45, guess by the sounds of it I will. Look for a couple sets of compatible sights! I have 3 of the Un marked govnt models from the deal they had a couple years ago, I like those and am still breaking the first one in! They were $500 for the .45 and a 1000 rounds of Norc ammo,,, another great deal!
