Looking for some input from people in the know. I have changed gear a bit on my next purchase. Was going to get an AR but am now leaning towards a NR black rifle for the ease of shooting. I like the flexibility of the NR's but the love the look of AR's. I am hoping to use the gun for plinking at the cottage as well as some CQB in Three Gun comp's. Budget is an issue. Would like to stay under a $1000 for the gun. Acc are easier to hide from the wife later....

I have been looking at some different guns and each seems to have as many pros as cons.

SU-16 meets the "cool" factor, has optional 10 round mags but seems to suffer from some QC issues.

Mini 14 also has the cool factor, QC seems to be there but has no optional 10 round mags...

CZ 858 has the cool factor, QC seems to be good, has 10 round ability with an adapter but have heard accuracy is less than stellar...

JR carbine is my wrench in the works. I know it is a totally diff animal from the rest but.. it has the "cool" factor, seems to have QC, I already have numerous mags and negate needing another calibre of ammo but range is limited should I change my intended focus from CQB.

Anybody have any thoughts or input on the above guns?

JR Carbine all the way!

Cheap to shoot (especially in 9mm) 10 round mags that you mentioned you already have for your Glock, superbly accurate, AR-15 Style controls and accessories, and much more quiet and safer to shoot at the cottage than a full blown rifle cartridge in .223 or 7.62x39.

I've had my 9mm JR for just over a month and TOTALLY love it. I've heard of issues with other calibres in this gun but the 9mm shoots fine. I haven't had a single misfire in more than 500 rounds so far. (A bit of a bee-atch to take apart and clean though but other than that its great)

10 round mags?? Mine are 15's! Love my job... lol

I currently own a CZ858 and a Kel Tec SU-16 and both are a lot of fun. Both are also quite accurate. I love being able to load 10rds in the SU and am looking into the mag adapter from Wolverine that allows the CZ to use the XCR pistol mags for 10rds also. It's difficult to choose my favourite.

Here's a picture of them with my Mossy 22lr.

I agree with P@rick... CZ/CSA 58 or Su-16 are your best options here.. I havn't noticed any QC issues with SU-16, specially if you are planing to add an AR stock kit. Both rifles are more then accurate enough for what ever you are going to use them for.

I would vote for a JRC in 9mm as well.

I've had mine since the spring. About 1500 rounds down the tube and its been great to me. 10 round glock mags are nice. 9mm is cheap to shoot and there is no shortage if it around normally.

I am going to be picking up an AR(have one on pre-order) for 3 gun comps. The lack of a bolt hold open and the position of the mag release on the JR slow it down quite a bit.

I do have my eye on a SU-16 also. When they are done up right they look nice. I might just end up spending more and getting a Robinson Arms XCR or a Tavor later down the road.

I really like mini-14's. I had one a few years back and I would like to pick up another one. Just with 5 round mags that is really holding me back.

I own / have owned them all.......

I agree completely with the above; I was more than impressed with the SU-16 I picked-up recently (Note that most if not all the initial QC issues are gone..)........out of the box, it (in my opinon, based on much mini-14 experience) the SU-16 is inherently more accurate than a mini-14, for less money. It also uses AR mags and accessories.

Ya, the SU-16 feels light...feels kinda plastic like.....maybe kinda cheap..........but isn't that what the nay-sayers said of the M16 in 1964?

If you can fire one, do it.......you'll be sold.

In southern Ontario, if you plan on hunting with your NR black rifle, you'll be confined to only two of your choices, the SU-16 or the Mini-14. I'm not familiar with the SU-16, but I know lots of guys hunt with their Minis, a nice rifle to have around a cottage or farm for varmints.

I think I am leaning towards the SU16. I like the cheaper 7.62x39 ammo of the CZ but I have been offered two full ammo boxes of factory .223 for free which would be reloadable. Not to mention the CZ requires a $200 adapter before it can take a 10 round mag for CQB. And the Mini 14 requires major mods to allow a 10 round mag. I am ruling out the JR mainly because I think I want to stick with a rifle cartidge should I choose to shoot at distance.

It's a bit of a trade off between the bulk 7.62 and the bulk .223. The 7.62 is cheaper but it uses corrosive primers so cleaning is more important. If someone is giving 2 full ammo boxes of .223, you'll be set for a long while.

He is not sure of exactly how many are in each as they were the culmination of several partial cases. They are .50 cal metal ammo boxes each filled to within an inch of the lid... Anyone care to guess because I won't be counting.. lol

If you want to shoot 3 gun get an ar or save for a more expensive nr like the xcr. Could get a norc ar for 3 gun and a cz for the cottage. The cz is a much better gun than the other nr's you mentioned. Some guys run them with reasonable success in 3 gun too.
