Long story short, these are both guns I don't need and won't use more than once in a blue moon, but a friend of mine is offering either to me at a good price ($400).

I love long-barreled .30-30s and I love the 81. I dont need either, though...

Which one would be a smart choice? Or should I just save my dough? I am getting to the point where i only buy guns I will use regularly.

Had a very nice condition Model 81 back in the 80's in .32 Rem., and it was a well made & straight shootin' rifle. The only bugaboo with me keepin' it was the sighting equipment options back then, along with ammo availability.

The Winchester NRA I had was delightful to carry and shoot as well as being very easy to upgrade to peep sights. I also hate chasing my brass, so my own preference goes to the '94 Win.

The Model 81 has a peep sight and is D&T for what appears to be a Weaver Sidemount.

It would certainly be a good moose and bear gun. In its current configuration, I could take it bear hunting at CFB Gagetown on my bike, since it's a takedown gun. I was thinking about buying a single shot for this use, but the Model 81 would pack much more firepower. I don't know how good the peep sights would be if the gun was taken down and reassembled.

That NRA rifle would be a beauty with peeps, for sure. The only reason I didn't jump on it was because I have a CIL 830 in .30-30 that will probably be my deer rifle for the forseeable future. It fits me perfectly. I just happen to know that Win 94s with pistol grips and long barrels don't come along every day!

Man go for the 300! My Grampa used one for years and years as his go to deer and moose gun. Even deer hyped up bein chased by dogs, 1 shot bang flop 90% of the time he used 150 grain Remington core lokts. No kick outta the gun either, I used it for a couple seasons. Maybe I'm just biased towards them but I'd go for the 300. Everybody has a 30/30 94, get a older marlin if you want a real lever 30/30.

Yeah I think I will take the .300. It's just to mean of a deer-killing machine not to. Plus, if I ever get a moose tag, it'll do the job handily!

Might post some photos of it at some point if I can get it sighted in.

From somebody who's had first hand experience with one and grew up watchin it fill the freezer, you won't be disappointed!
