Hey everyone just wanted to post this to let you all know about the upcoming NRL Hunter Match in Alberta about 25 min west of Stavely. June 7-9th 2024

NRL Hunter is a field-style precision rifle match based around preparing hunters for their season or a hunt. Shooters will carry their rifle and gear to shooting positions and all stages are set up to be blind, so that the shooter must find, range, and engage all targets.

These matches are ton of fun, and I guarantee attending one will make you a better shooter and hunter. They are designed with the first time competitor in mind so don't be shy about signing up.
You can come out and compete in one of the divisions for series points and generous prize table, or you can shoot 'skills' division (cheaper) to just get better with whatever rifle you have, 223, 30-06 or whatever. Basically all you need is a rifle/ammo, binos and a range finder. .

I am not affiliated with the match but have shot a couple of these. I can try and answer any questions you may have.

Typically, what is the level of challenge or difficulty?
what mil-size targets at what distances?
I realize each match is different but is their a standard?

thanks for the link

Matches can be challenging when you consider you are locating, ranging, and shooting up to 4 targets in 4 minutes, including taking your pack off and getting setup. However, there is a 'skills' division that does not compete for series points or prizes where you can get extra help from the RO to find targets or even get the ranges, it is a great way to shoot your first match and get the hang of things, plus the entry fee is only $180.

In my experience Target sizes will average 2-3 MOA or 0.6 to 0.9 mil.
From the rule book: "c. The goal is to have targets animal themed for the area and a recommended size would be the vital size for the themed animal. 18”x12” for a mule deer as an example. Which is the usable vital zone size for a large mule deer."
"Expect majority of targets to be between 200 and 700 yards, with distances that may reach 1000 yards at some events."

Targets are either left to right or right to left or near to far.
Possible stage combinations are:
1 target engaged from 4 positions.
2 targets engaged from 2 positions.
4 targets engaged from 1 position.

Just got back from the Defiance Anti Social match in Montana. What a blast. These matches are a ton of fun, if you are on the fence do not hesitate. I shot a bone stock Ruger American Predator and did well, you don't need a fancy rifle. Just come out and shoot, guaranteed you will be hooked.

If you missed it you missed out!

Incredible venue and awesome stages they have an amazing piece of property to work with, the Pics below only show a couple of stages but we were shooting across canyons up and down canyons, through brush off logs, trees basically everything.

Tons of different rifles an setups and calibers, from dedicated 6.5 creed NRL guns all the way to factory Savages and Ruger's, or custom lightweight hunting rifles chambered in everything up to 28 Nosler and 300 WSM!

Initial report is this will be a go again next year.
