NS Squirrel Question

In our Furharvesting & Hunting manual for 2013 -14, It says there's a Squirrel season, but also that if they are pests they can be dispatched all year.

I'll be honest with you all, I shoot and eat Red Squirrel all year round. Not a whole lot, but a couple times a month maybe. There's a Crap ton of em' around here.

I just wanted to know if I'm not the only one who still does this, and if I am really pushing something here.

No reds where I live. But I do hunt them and eat them. Mild, sweet meat. And no heavy carcass to drag out.

In southern BC Red squirrels are under pressure and getting forced out by the big black ones...fox squirrels?? Considered a schedule b animal and can be destroyed any time any how all year long. The black ones are also very predatory of bird eggs and babies.

While hunting i have been so tempted to shoot Reds with my big rifles. Just hate when the bush telegraph starts up. One day i might just do it, but have not shot a squirrel since i was 13.

Round here we almost have exclusively Reds.

the big black ones are a colour morph of the eastern gray squirrel - an introduced species that can be killed anytime/anywhere in BC. Both red and gray squirrels eat a lot of bird eggs/babies.

They are schedule C, which is can hunt any time, without license. Sched. B you can only hunt if they are damaging your property.

And yeah, they are Eastern Grey Squirrels. You can also hunt fox squirrels. There is nothing about red squirrels though, so I dont think you can shot them??
