Number of 12(6) owners in Canada

There was another thread on here a while ago where a CGNner posted some results of a freedom of information request on this...it struck me that the number was dwindling every year - as owners who let their RPAL lapse automatically lose their 12(6). Can't recall exactly but I thought the number of owners was around 35,000.

Got mine.

its an absolute senseless shame that the Govt. will not let us responsible individuals apply for, and get a 12.(6), I mean, they could make it so we need to pay an exorbitant (money grabbing) fee, go through yet another test, with yet another money grab, then maybe buy a (tax stamp) for each weapon purchased (see: money grab), and after all that, issue us the elusive 12.(6).... Or, they could make it so, a gun club would hold the 12.(6), so the weapons wouldnt actually be owned by an individual, but the club, not the best scenario, but then at least we could play with, say, a full auto, suppressed mp5, or a select fire FN-FAL! now that would be cool.... ;-)

Those that let their RPAL lapse are probably a small minority. 12(6) holders passing away is probably a bigger number. I youngest 12(6) holders would be early 40s but the average age would be higher. Lots of 12(6) firearms I've seen in local gun stores are from estates.

Most of the firearms you mention are not 12(6) but are other 12(X) categories. 12(6) are handguns prohibited by barrel length less than 4 inches or by calibre .25 ACP or .32 ACP.

Some prohibs can be passed down as 12(7) to family members if manufactured before 1946. Other prohibs can be rebarelled or calibre converted to get them out of prohib class, like what Epps is doing with the .30 Reid.

According to the CFP info on the web.......

As of Dec. 2014 there were 185,707 prohibs registered in Canada

As of Jan. 2010 there were 203,987 prohibs registered in Canada

That's quite a drop in 5 years. I didn't see any stats on 12(6) licenses.

Delayed confiscation - EXACTLY THE ORIGINAL INTENT. Anyone who thinks his guns of any type are safe is delusional. And we let it happen on our watch.

I watched a flick on the Suffragette movement last night. EVERY such movement required direct action when all other means had failed. Hundreds of women were beaten, jailed and otherwise cruelly treated in the fight for women's rights, something we now take for granted. Ultimately it took the death of a martyr to get the point across.

We've become too complacent and feminized which is why we continue to lose. If we don't man up and grow a pair, the game will be lost and we'll be totally pussified like the brits and Aussies.

To bad there wasn't a graduation system, for example; after 12 years of owning a restricted weapon and license and following all the laws, you graduate to a prohib license.
