NYPD forces remaining officers using .38 caliber revolver to update sidearms

I am not surprised they made them switch EPS and RCMP were forced to switch too. My dad has been RCMP for about 30 years (he remembers the revolver days) and has had 4 different holster to learn on. He is annoyed but just goes home and familiarizes himself with it. He hated to switch from the revolver because he shot way better with it but admits the higher capacity is needed. (please don't turn this into a needed capacity thread)

The NY trigger is not just a New York thing. Edmonton Police and RCMP guns have 12 pound triggers too.

I have been told by an EPS guys that they put the NY trigger in because of the transition from revolver to semi auto. Apparently it makes an easier transition. 20 years later they are still stuck with it. They also justify it as a good thing and an extra safety because you have to really want to shoot it. I am sure RCMP is of the same mentality.

I think its a bunch of crap. Practice with the gun, I never had an issue training with the Hi-power. Nor do police all over the world who use DA/SA guns.

Careful you will offend Fundamental God. You of course nailed it. A relatively light pistol and a heavy trigger pull is no friend of mine. A 53oz revolver and a 12lb trigger pull is another kettle of fish.

Truth!
Even the RCMP issue SW was easier to shoot than the Glock and it has a 12 lb pull. Don’t know why they feel different. Maybe because I’m used to my Glock so the difference was extremely noticeable. The NY Glock trigger was so heavy, it actually felt like the striker wasn’t cocked and you were pulling against a dead trigger. My buddy sold that Glock and bought a Gen 4 with a normal pull and is much happier. I believe his HK is now up for sale!

I have never cared for the Glocks grip so I pretty much have stayed away from that platform. There are better options for me and for what I play at. I have a friend in Pr. George in the RCMP who hit a tossed 4 litre milk jug fill of water with six rounds before it hit the ground so the 5946 can be shot quickly and accurately but perhaps not on the first try ...from personal experience. LOL. Walter is making what they call a "Standard" version of their M2 5" for the LEO market. The gun, as sold to civilians comes with a 5lb 6oz trigger as it uses the same trigger group as the other models in the line. I suspect some departments ask for a heavier spring arrangement. The gun has a trigger pull that has to be experienced to be believed for a striker fired gun.

Hahaha! Heavy trigger AND ugly! Someone must hate them boys if they got the VP! At least they got 18 rounds!

They are a polarizing pistol that is for sure. I personally love them. I think they look supercool and were such a departure from anything else at that time. A failed concept, but innovative and paved the way for some others that have proven to be a little more successful.

And the staple gun trigger analogy is a good one.

Back in the day when HK pioneered great legendary guns, like the P7 and P9S, the VP70 was too revolutionary then. It is a good example on the evolution of polymer pistols and the gun industry has learnt from it.
Would love to try one again just for nostalgia sake!

They should have just issued them VP70s!

Well if you are ever out my way, or if I move back the the valley you are welcome to put it through its paces (a spin on the 13 and 547 would be required in return!)

Yes HK was very innovative. I'd note that the VP ended up being sold in, to and for a market it was not designed for so clearly it was a compromise from the beginning as a pistol for the civilian market. In terms of it original intent, pretty much every machine pistol with a buttstock has been eclipsed by better suited tools.

Well said gdawg and I agree. The G18, Beretta 93, VP70 and even the Mauser Broomhandle definitely are limited application guns!
If you ever make it out here, you'll have a place to stay and Scotch to drink...as long as your cool toys come with you! LOL!! Same for me if I make it east!

Sounds good

Supposedly the holster used with the NY-1 Model 64 is "snatchproof" :)rolleyes:) and the revolver must be twisted while drawing to unholster.

lol..12 pound trigger eh...man that sounds like a good time! Hey..you..mr.bank robber..yah..bud..listen, I want to shoot you because..well you shot at me first..but I got this goddamn 12 pounder here..and well..its a sum #####..so hows bout we forget the gun fight..and yall just sit down on the curb and let me cuff ya...

A 12 lb trigger is a good indicator of a failed institution. So stupid its painful to think of. Next we'll be hearing that handcuff can no longer be carried on the belt. Must be shackled on ankles from now on.

Sigh.
