so my oldest son is taking his PAL/Hunters safety in April

He wants to hunt Grouse on our family property.

My uncle is very kindly long term lending (basically giving but saying its a lend so he takes care of it)
a nice O/U 20 ga 22 mag

ive never shot 22 mag. What would he shoot with it?
Ive googled a bunch. The only thing i common i can find is Coyote and that's not his thing right now.

Do i even bother buying ammo for it or just stick with 20 ga?

Sounds like you know what the 20 gauge is for. Find a load the .22 magnum barrel likes and it works great for everything from squirrels to short range coyotes. Yes head and neck is preferred placement of my shots at edible game as a some of the bullets aren't friendly on meat.

Are you allowed to carry this upland hunting for example when 22 cal is not allowed normally other than select months
Cheers

You are correct, he cant carry it in Deer season.

He could carry my 20 ga single but it kicks like a mule. He will pob just stay home and play x-box in November ;)

You can use the .22 mag on anything you would use a .22 LR for, it's just a little more destructive. It has a little more reach than a LR. The shotgun would be harder to miss with.

That’s more or less what I though, just wasn’t sure I was missing anything?

I don’t really see a situation where he will use the 22 mag where we are. No big open fields. Longest shot is 100 yards at best.

He will def use the 20 ga for grouse but I don’t think I’ll even buy ammo for mag. We already have a nice little 22 lr bolt for plinking and varments.

Sell the xbox and buy a 410 :p Make some memories with dad, maybe learn some stuff about life, sure beats getting vegging out in front a tv.

Truth be told, I don’t want him there in November :) At last not till he is 18....

I want him and his brothers up there for grouse and turkey, But the deer camp gets a little messy after dark.

The .22 mag is really a sub 50 yard coyote round and even 50 is pushing things. I carried one for a while, shot 1 coyote with it and bought a 223 the next day. I had to shoot the coyote 4 or 5 times to kill it. It acted like it was just stung by a bee the first 2 or hits. Coyotes are tough and can be hard to kill. I've even had a few get up and run after taking a 223 in the chest. The 22 mag really has no practical use for me. It's too much for rabbits and not enough for coyote. I would not hesitate to carry that gun though, even in deer season. Just make sure you don't have any 22 mag ammo on you. I have a savage 22lr/410 and I've been stopped by the wardens with it. They didn't have any problem with it because I was just carrying 410 shells.
