Sorry if this has already been beaten to death. I just read this http://www.nfa.ca/node/128 and now I'm even more confused.

I'm looking at a new stock and barrel for my 10 22. I would really like to put a 16" barrel on it, but it looks like that would be too much fun for Canada.

Reading the NFA link it seems that 18.5" is only the limit for center fire semi-auto? So for my rimfire semi-auto I can go all the way down to 18" before it becomes prohibited? Yea! An extra half inch! :dancingbanana:

Also I need to keep the OAL over 26" right? So if the stock I'm looking at says it has a "13 3/4" length of pull" and I put a 18" barrel on it I will end up with a 31 3/4" OAL length? Is that right?

So just to be perfectly clear, a 10 22 with an 18" barrel and a 13ish" length of pull stock would be non-restricted?

Thanks!

Not sure how to post pics otherwise I would show ya. I just bought it on EE it was unfired so I have only shot a few rounds to break in the barrel and have not had a chance to sight it in yet. I am still waiting for my optics to come in so I just have a cheap Tasco on it in the mean time. It is a Dlask receiver, Kidd Bolt, Hornet 2 Stage Trigger, Shilen 16" match Barrel and an Archangel Stock. I paid lots so it better be accurate LOL!

Actually after further reading I believe you are correct about only the 26" OAL applying to rimfire. So given a 13 3/4 length of pull I could in theory put a 13" barrel on it and still be legal.:D:D:D

1) You can use any length of barrel (as long as over 105mm) on your 10/22, provided it is manufactured at that length and not cut to it.

2) All barrels can be cut to 18", but any centerfire semi with a barrel shorter than 18.5" becomes a restricted firearm.

3) OAL is the only criteria for your 10/22 (and all rimfires and manual action centerfire). Stay over 26" OAL in its shortest configuration (i.e. - stock collapsed, if that applies) and you are non-restricted. Under 26" OAL and you are restricted.

4) LOP is the distance from the butt of the stock to the trigger, not the rear of the barrel. LOP numbers are meaningless for OAL.

5) Yes, a 10/22 with a fixed stock and 18" barrel would be well over the 26" limit and would be non-restricted. I have one here that is about 36.5" OAL with an 18.5" barrel.
