Do any of you own a scoped Obernforf Mauser? What scope and height rings are you using? How is the crlearance for the bolt - did it have to be modified? Is the mounting situation similar to a ZG47 or a 21H?

Thanks.

Oberndorf 98 Mausers are, if unmolested, sought after as one of the premiun actions for rifle builds / military collectables. If yours is untouched I would seriously reconsider and not "fill" it full of holes. Is it still in military configuration? Lots of "cheap" Mausers out there already D&T'd & bolt altered for scope mounting. But to each his own. Your reference to 47 / 21 is somewhat puzzling. A pic. would help. --- John303.

Mauser sporter

Here's pics of my Oberndorf model B sporter with scope.

Would not have done it myself, but rifle was previously drill/taped and bolt-handle altered for scope. These rifles have quite a low comb so the lower a scope the better. Obviously you would not want to alter an original, collector-grade factory sporter.

They both require fairly high mounts for even a small objective. With low mounts my unaltered 21H's bolt would touch and drag on the occular bell on a 3-9x33 Leupold compact. I prefer a cheek weld vs chin weld for shooting position.

When scoped, most original Oberndorf got claw mounts in the days. Some are also found here and there with vintage detachable side mounts.
Both makes an expensive alternative here today, even when one buying used mounts / rings. They both will need expert job to be fitted.

I have read somewhere that there is a mount that replaces the rear sight, without having to drill or tap the rifle...no damage to the rifle and it's reversible!

You may be refering to the cocking piece peep sight mounted which is a no modification swap. Only have to replace the cocking piece. Easy to have it back to original.
But it's not easy to find either.

IIRC mine has a G&H side mount with a Lyman "Alaskan" in QD rings. It is quite high.
