occasional ELR/long range hunter build

Got it zeroed today, took it out to 905yds (on a 2/3 IPSC) then went looking for critters but only saw a couple does, haha. The HNT is really nice, super light but very solid feeling and a joy to shoot. Gonna have to make it "mine" now with some krylon and a sponge...

Very nice looking rifle! Seems a shame to paint it, but I don't like all black rifles either, and black is my favourite color. I wonder how durable that carbon arca rail will be?

Thanks! Krylon comes off pretty easy anyways but I do like to break up the outline of a rifle. The carbon arca rail held up great in testing, so I was told. I don't anticipate any issues, carbon is tough stuff. I do plan on installing a small (2.5") chunk of pic rail up front for the bipod. Right now I have it on the arca rail butted up against the bipod stud as a sort of "recoil lug". In the past, I've found that bipods attached to arca rails on lightweight (relatively) high recoiling rifles tend to move under recoil.

I've been looking into a similar build with a R700 Varmint .308. However I'm already intimidated by the possible weights i'm getting on paper before i actually start, especially when I'm used to the 7.5lbs and under range.

I mean, it all depends on what you're trying to achieve. I took a barrelled action with an optic mounted that already weighed 8.0lbs, dropped it in the HNT and got a 9.8lbs rifle. If you're using a R700 Varmint, the weight of that barrelled action will be a given but you can certainly run a lighter weight optic/mount than I chose (NF NX8 2.5-20 @ 28oz on a tall MDT scope rail and MDT Premier rings). My goal here wasn't to build the lightest possible rifle but to lighten what was already a very capable system, if that makes sense?

Beauty rifle!
Have you tried it out with the SAUM yet? Wondering if losing 2lbs+ hurt it at all for ELR?

Haven't tried it with the SAUM yet but don't really anticipate the weight loss will hurt it's performance it range. I've shot it in it's .308 configuration out to 905 yds with no issues spotting hits/misses so I'm sure the SAUM will be fine.
