I recently bought a 1905 to play with. I found a bolt on here, cleaned the barrel and took it out for a run this afternoon. I found that it wouldn't pick up a round from the magazine, so I just single loaded it. The old rifle performed well, rang the gong six shot in a row after a warning/ranging shot.

It seemed that the follower would not rise high enough. I noticed a little bar of steel along the left side of the receiver that seemed to prevent the follower from coming up all the way. I compared it to another 1905 I have, and sure enough, that one doesn't have the bar. On the single shot one, the bar is attached to a curved little lever that sticks out inside the trigger guard, at the front. There is what looks like a factory hole drilled up through the trigger guard for the lever.

I'll try to get some decent pics to show what I am talking about. The lever will pull the bar down only a wee bit because the bar takes a right angle as seen in the pic, and the bar is actually behind a piece that is attached solid. The lever and bar won't move upwards at all.

Mk II (except for the II**) and Mk. III rifles have magazine cut-offs. Mk. II is controlled by the little latch in the trigger guard, Mk. III by the position of the bolt stop (a la M1903 Springfield). The rounds are depressed so the bolt will not pick one up.
I am not sure about the mechanical design you are describing.

That "hook" is the magazine cutoff. Push it up in the trigger guard, should solve your feeding problem. Right now it is doing what it is supposed to do... holding a full magazine in reserve.

Ah, now I see! The lever needs to be pried away from the trigger guard a wee bit, then it is spring loaded to raise the cut-off. Pops right up. Easy to bring it down.

Thanks people! I can take it back out on the front line again! :p

It has a non-adjustable rear sight sleeved on the barrel just ahead of the mag depress. Nice old rifle to carry, balance is just right.

Don't try to pry it away. You will likely damage the mechanism. Pull it down and back toward the trigger and then let the spring pull it up.

Thanks for the tip! Works like a charm, now that I know how to work the little lever. Good old CGN!
