Gentlemen and other gunnutz
I recently bought a model 99 that has me stumped as to type, year of manufacture and why it looks like it does. The serial number is 9683xx. It is in 300 Sav with a 24 inch barrel. The roll mark on top of the barrel 14 1/2in. from the muzzle is SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION
CHICOPEE FALLS MASS U.S.A.
as shown in Fig.A-11 of the Collectors Guide to the Savage 99 by David Royal.
It has the usual lever safety and the cartridge number indicator hole on the left side and the words Savage over Model 99 is printed on the left side of the action in line with the bore. Top is drilled and tapped for scope mounts.
On the left lower tang (hidden by the butt stock) is a stamped a cross + and a partial inspectors mark with K M
17E. In front of the lever boss 11L in an oval.
Walnut fore arm end rounded like an F type stamped J S over a 4. Walnut butt stock with pistol grip( no Cap)
Stamped K. M 7 with 1 overlapping the right leg of the M and an E slightly below and to the right of the7.
Curved steel butt plate marked on the back with the same K M 7 this time the1 is above the right leg of theM and an E under and right of the 7 .
Any help in identifying this rifle much appreciated.

The serial number (I used 00 in place of XX to make the search engine work) suggests a manufacture date of 1951 or later, although 99 serial numbers were not always sequential. The lever box "L" suggests a manufacture date of 1960, either date makes the curved steel butt plate a mystery since by '50s those had become unfashionable. I have not been able to locate an image of a curved steel butt plate on a pistol gripped 99. Kinda intriguing since I was expecting the manufacture date to be in the 20s or 30s. When I get home I'll see if I can dig up anything more helpful.
