Just curious how many rounds most people shoot out of their big game rifles during the off season and of those what percentage are shot off the bench and from real word hunting conditions. Also, what ranges do you shoot at and what type of targets do you like?

I try to do 100 rounds per month centerfire (30-06, 303,, but how many 22lr I go through varies a fair amount.

In a clearcut, targets nailed to a pallet, 100-300 yards.

Usually sitting or kneeling stances.

Lately it's been gongs and beverages over targets.

I shoot around 500 rounds plus per annual utilizing about 4 to 5 rifles.................. love reloading and shooting. Practicing on the rifle range only breeds confidence when out in the field.

A brick of 22,once a week, sometimes at one sitting. Centre fire, a few at a time as I'm working up a load, over sand bags, off the bench. Then ground hogs, crows, coyotes, as needed. As big game season approaches I do long ranges off the bench with my hunting rifles, and short range 50 to 100 yds freehand and any other position. In between is trap and skeet from a home thrower. The ranges are all on my farm. Respectfully. Jim Mansell

I've never kept count, but not as much as I'd like to... it's hard to find an appropriate place to practice here in central Ontario, the trees tend to get in the way of long distance shooting. My current "range" is a 300 yd long beaver meadow, so that's my limit right there. I do a lot of offhand shooting with the .22, helps with the timing, not so much the trajectory. Plus an endless amount of dry firing at home.

Maybe a brick of .22 a year (offhand), maybe 8-10 boxes of big game rifle ammo. Half off the bench, some free hand, some off sticks. Distances from 25-300m. Probably another box or two off other peoples rifles. 20 slugs or so. 2-300 shotgun rounds at clays.

Mostly paper targets, lots of little pumpkins in the fall, lol. Clays set up as targets for the rifle. Have a 300m gong.

From May to August, I might fire a couple of boxes of .308, sometimes not even that. More than that of .22LR and .22WMR, but not a whole lot, even of those. All at the Range, paper targets, 100 meters usually, some bench, some offhand. Got better stuff to do in Summer.....:)

Generally 1500+ of centerfire per year, out to 1200+ yards from field positions. No clue on the amount of rimfire. Lots though.

I don't even do load development from a bench.....

I find a great way to practice is out in the gopher patch with a bolt action .22 no bipod. You male your shots count and you make them all from field positions (mostly sitting or kneeling for me). As for centerfire I used to be 1500/year, not in the last two years though. Probably 350, mix of field at gongs and bench at paper.

Regular range trips where I never leave without shooting at 100,200,300 yards each. Calibers change up, rifles change up, postions change up. Once awhile I go elsewhere and stretch my legs so to spreak but its something I honestly need to make more regular and focused if I want to improve much. The one thing I don't really get to practice that I think is important is moving targets.
I also try to keep my hunting and shooting as evenly balanced as possible. There is always something to hunt in BC. :)
