What do you suggest for an off the shelf rifle, .300 WM, for 230gr Bergers? I know the best bet would be a good barrel, stock and action put together by someone a lot smarter than me, but let's put that aside for now. So twist rate should be fast enough to properly stabilize, magazine box long enough to allow for COAL etc and a good trigger. I'd possibly be open to having the throat re-cut. Doesn't have to be a very heavy barrel as I won't be shooting timed courses or anything like that. I was initially thinking 700 Mil-Spec 5R, but the twist rate is too slow. Ideally should be available for under $1500.

Similar question but in 7mm with at least 1:8.5 twist but preferably 1:8 twist. Anything out there like that? Not interested in the smaller calibers.

700 Police in 300 WM has a 10" twist. A great all around rifle to get you started. I have seen them floating between 1200-1500 and it will hold its value and have every aftermarket part possible both available and easily obtainable. You can easily get a DM system but the hinge plate would work perfectly for most applications.

Thanks Jerry - it would be nice to have a long magazine box so stuff like the Tikka is out. On the 7mm, as an FYI, my factory Steyr-Mannlicher has a twist rate of 8.6, but the scope mounting options are very poor. I ran the stability numbers and at my elevation - 2200' - and my estimated velocity of 2800fps (may be a touch optimistic) in a 9 twist gives an SG=1.36
 
SG of 1.0 by definition is a stable bullet.

Anything over is a degree of stability. This really only becomes important if going so far that subsonic flight will occur.

For ELR shooting, SGs of 1.4 to 2.0 "may", and I emphasis may, offer very slight improvements in BC. In general, a bullet capable of subsonic flight is not spin sensitive so variations in SG have little affect on your come ups.

A bullet that is not good with subsonic flight "may" transition better at very high spin RPM's... or you may simply delay the tumble by a few hundred yards.

I know where all this SG stuff is coming from and I definitely test it in real world shooting. Error in powder charge weights causes a far larger effect on LR BC and come ups then barrel twist rates.

Tipping bullets is reported to also offer more BC increase... YMMV.

And we have tested bullets not really good at subsonic flight at higher then normal RPMs.... didn't stop them from going wonky way the heck out there.

For better or worst, much of the new gen bullets are designed to work very well in supersonic flight with reduced drag BUT these same bullets do not always like to go transonic or subsonic. So using a higher then standard twist to get some calculated SG value in hopes of improved flight, may just end up moving new problems into your flight path.

As they say, only 1 way to find out...

I have the rem 700 5R in 300 win and just worked up a load for the 230 berger hybrid OTM tactical. So far i am very impressed with them. The 5R has a 1:10 twist and i am loading them to fit in the mag and have shot a 0.393" - 5 shot group at 100m. I am loading retumbo and getting 2636fps.

The website I looked at said it has a 11.25 twist. What is your COAL? How far is that off the lands? Not that it matters at the accuracy and velocity you are getting.
 
I just went and double checked the rifle and it is stamped 1 in 10 twist. I am pretty sure the 5R 308win is the 1 in 11.25". My COAL is 3.590" and I can not tell you how far off the lands. I measured the mag and when I loaded a few to that length I was against the lands so I just adjusted till i wasn't touching anymore and used that for COAL.
 
I am running a sendero sf2 300 wm with 210 gr bergers with good results including good hunting terminal performance out to 975m. Just got a couple boxes of the new 215gr hybrids. Haven't shot them past 100 m but they group a little better and I am able to keep close the same velocity as with the 210s(2850fps out of 26" barrel). I have them loaded 0.050" off the lands which near max length for the AI long action magazines. 3.615". This higher BC of the 215s will pick me up a couple hundred foot pounds of energy at distance over the 210s I just need to test them on game before I commit to making the switch.
